I participated in football for three years and earned a varsity letter, but I decided to quit senior year. Should I still include this activity in my Common App?

Obviously, it asks for when you participated for a reason.

And there are only 10 possible spots. I could put in another activity, so I’m wondering if I should still include it.

Sorry, my post is ambiguous. I was asking if I should still include the activity on my application because I could use another one.

The answer would depend on what you have to replace it with.

One reason to list football is that participation in team sports indicates good time management skills. Colleges know that most kids who played sports in high school will not be impact players in college, but they’re also aware that sports require a big time commitment and kids who can maintain high grades while still participating in outside activities are likely to have the extra reserves a heavier college schedule might call on.

Okay thanks!

The CA asks you to list “principal extracurricular activities” in the order of importance to you. If you felt football was still an important activity to list then do so, but explain why you did not take it during your senior year, in the Additional Information section. (perhaps due to other conflicts with school, work, family responsibilities, etc.) This is where you can add anything from a resume of accomplishments or a possible negative that you want to explain. If it’s a decision you regret, perhaps you would consider mentioning an interest to play football in college.

If you don’t have many activities for this section, then you might as well include it. Playing team sports is a big plus in my opinion!
