Should I just go to cc?

Hello, I recently committed to San Francisco state but now I’m kind of regretting it… I plan on transferring to a uc or a private school and I’ve been hearing that its a lot harder to do that from a cal state… but at the same time, being at a cal state increases my chances of graduating in 4 years. Should i just go to a cc instead? I’m just worried that it’ll be really hard to transfer despite what everyone said. I’m not an idiot; I just slacked a little in high school. Do you think it’s possible with some effort to transfer from a cc?

If you want to go to college this fall, go to SF State. Then work very hard to improve your grades. That way you will develop a track record at a state university and be closer to graduating. Perhaps you will get not one of the schools you want or maybe not. However, if you do well, your options to transfer should improve.

Now, some schools predetermined as second rate for a variety of reasons, but many to most at least have not hired rotten faculty to teach lousy students. Get every bit of knowledge, skills, learning and study skills, what ever. If you slacked a little in high school, don’t do that anymore. You may find that SF State is not as easy as you think. So, work hard and make the best of this opportunity to learn and earn really good grades.

I’m not sure why you think it’s harder to be done in four years going to a CC first versus a Cal State. It’s my understanding that all the state schools are essentially impacted and it is challenging to get the classes you need to graduate in four or to be ready for transfer after two. I think what you’ve heard about it being easier to transfer from a CC is true - at least in terms of the priority they give - that it is easier to do so from a CC. Since no one can really say what will be easier for you, maybe make your decision based on two things: finances and what you want to be doing these next couple years. If money is not an issue, continue to consider SF State. If it is an issue, think of the money you will save by choosing CC. If you want to be away at college, living the more immersed college life, then continue to consider SF State. If you are perfectly happy staying home and doing CC, then it may be a great choice.

I think that your chances of graduating in 4 years are the same if you go to SF State as if you go to CC -> a UC or more prestigious CSU. Remember, they’re all within the same system, they have broadly the same general ed requirements.

As a current California community college student i’d liketo add in. If your top priority is getting to a uc it would behoove you not to go to a cc (assuming your planning to attend a california community college, google UC Transfer Admission Guarantee). You are undoubtedly going to have a much harder time transferring from a csu to a uc than a cc to a uc simply because it’ll be easier to get a higher GPA, CC’s are transfer oriented and you get top priority when applying to UCs and other CSUs. On the other hand if your main concern is to graduate in 4 years I would reconsider the community college route if you do not know what you plan to major in. From my experience the reason people get stuck in community college for more than two years or are unable to transfer is because they are not motivated enough or they are unable to make their mind up on their major. As long as your motivated wherever you are you will succeed.
