I am fortunate enough to attend a good high school; however, a brilliant friend of mine who I met over the summer at the Brown Summer Study program for high schoolers is not as lucky. Though her school was rated one of the best in her area, she lives in Virginia, and she feels that going to her school and wasting her time doing busy work is holding her back. She wants to take community college courses and do everything possible to get out of her town and her school as soon as possible. I’m not so certain that this is a good idea.
My question then is: What should she do? She really wants to get into Brown (she’s a Junior currently) but is tired of pretending that she likes her town and her work and just desperately wants to escape.
Thanks.

Why don't you think that's a good idea? Sounds pretty reasonable to me -- if she doesn't feel she's getting a lot out of her high school experience, it would make sense for her to try something new.

Who doesn't want to get out of their area? I mean, come on, ND has ****ty academics even though I take all APs. Why wouldn't taking these college courses be a good idea? I mean, more preparation for college doesn't seem like a bad idea to me. Also, I have never once said something positive about where I come from so that will probalby increase her motivation for acheiving this goal and she hopefully will. ECs would be great. Leadership and community service as well.

Hey, Zrfen1, do you know a girl named Rachel who's currently a freshman at Brown from your town? She's a friend of mine!

I don't know her personally, but I do know of her. Do you know Ana from ND who is currently a sophomore?

Doesn't ring a bell... sorry.

Maybe I wasn't being exactly clear....so I'll rephrase my question and see what happens:
She is currently in the middle of her Junior year and she wants to leave as soon as possible. Do you think that trying to get all her credits and senior year courses in by the end of junior year and going to community college for a semester or trying to get into some college at the end of junior year is a bad idea? She still really wants to go to Brown but wants to leave her town.

she could also apply over summer so that she gets accepted second semester.

But would you recommend applying to community college for a semester and then trying to get into Brown? Or would taking such a course make it near impossible to get into Brown? (Especially from community college.)

Contact the adrep's at Brown with as thoughtfully worded a question as you can. Skip the part about wanting to get out of town - make it purely a question of how to proceed to have he best chance of getting into Brown while getting the best education in the meantime.
