I am a freshmen in college. I am trying to plan ahead, and I am considering taking two online courses. The two courses are Art history and Environmental Science with lab. The classes last from 05/27 through 06/27. Do you think the course load will be too heavy? I have never taken an online course, so I do not know what to expect. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
At my school two classes online is full time wether it is online or in the classroom. Online classes can be tricky because you have to make time for it. You can’t fall back and expect to keep up. Everything is on you own. I would recommend just taking one at first. See if it’s for you then signing up for more.
My son took 4 online classes (two per session) after freshman year in order to get some basic required gen ed courses out of the way., He was a double engineering major and had many required classes to concentrate on.
He took an English comp class, and a history class. I forget the others. He took them from a community college online and a local 4 year college online. He was able to go at his own pace which was much faster than the syllabus. I think he would tell you it was pretty easy. How can you take the lab portion of the environmental science class online?
If you aren’t a procrastinator and don’t need constant reminders and can go at a fast pace, go for it! I took three online classes last summer after my freshman year and I did fine. I was also shadowing a physical therapist, and nannying. It’s all about time management.
Don’t expect you will be able to do much else. My son did an online course one summer and was working part time. It was pretty intense getting the lectures (online) in, plus the projects and an exam every five days.
It depends on the course/program so really hard to say. My kids have done so and it has been a different experience for each.
Whatever you do, make sure to clear with your own school that the credits will transfer and that they will fulfill requirements you are planning them to, even if electives.
