I'm currently a sophomore(10th grade) and my score is about a 1900(not including essay). 650 math 600 CR 650 writing. I only have the BB, Barrons 2400 and grubers for math, and the DH words. Should I start using this stuff now or later? I don't want to study now and forget a bunch of stuff but I dont want to have to cram over the summer when the exam is near. What should I do? I really want to get a 2300+(800 math, 750 CR, 750 WR at the worst). Help me pls.

You guys are a shy bunch.

1900 to 2300 is a pretty big jump. If you have a lot of time on your hands and you really want a good shot, your best bet would be to stay away from practice SATs and vocab lists for a long time and instead build some general skills that will be useful outside the standardized test arena. I would recommend that you read a lot about whatever interests you and work on hard problems that really make you think. It might seem like overkill, but these are the kinds of things that will definitely pay dividends in the long run, much more so than simply prepping for the SAT.

I think most people that score well on standardized tests without agonizing over them follow some sort of strategy like this. The point is to build the fuzzy, heuristic skills that will help you with whatever endeavors you decide to apply yourself to.

Thanks. Is it really that big of a jump? The people who get 2250+ on their SAT’s usually have a score in that ballpark in early 10th grade? I thought everyone w/ those scores would be in the 1600-1900 range and would improve in 10th grade as they learn the material that’s on the SAT.

I think its a very realistic jump.
I got an 181 on the PSAT sophomore year and got a 2270 on the SAT this year with basically no studying.
Just do well in school and start with the SAT and SAT IIs at the beginning of your junior year.

No, it’s not that big of a jump if you’re currently a sophomore.

You need to start working now,because to get that jump you need to memorize Direct Hits and many words and get 12 in your essay,which can be done either if you write good or memorize some examples and adept them to your needs.

To get 800 in math you just need to solve alot and understanding the problems and then you would see patterns with the problems and your thinking to solve the problems will be faster and faster.

thanks =) Should I start with bb or what?

GenericMath cetainly didn’t do well on the writing portion of the SAT. :P

@Clandarkfire

I don’t need to study all grammar in order to do good on the sat I just studied what the SAT asks for :D.

@Megafund

I suggest Bluebook,Barron 2400,Mcgawhills,and kaplan.

frankly, I’d be surprised. I took the PSAT cold as a sophomore and got about a 210’ studied a tad for march and got 2260. Took SATon Saturday again hopefully for about a 2350. Not sure that you can jump from ~1800 though.

I went from a 1900 this summer to a goodness knows what I got on this SAT. But I’m expecting a high 2200 (which, IMHO, is good enough). So yes, it’s very doable. My suggestion is to start now, but don’t overload.

You should start now.
I started my SAT prep in my rising junior summer and I am regretting
Start now; unless you are 100 percent sure that you won’t slack off.
