Should I pretty much expect a triple room ? (ERC)

So many students told me that at most of the colleges at UCSD, there are no more double rooms.
at each floor, there are around 2 singles and all the rest are pretty much triple rooms.
I’m gonna apply to be in single but should I pretty much expect a triple ?
and if I apply for a single room can I still have backup roommates or is it just randomly assigned then?
Thanks in advance!

That’s ERC’s housing. It’s pretty much all triples and singles. You might get a single, but if not, you’re getting a triple.

If you request roommates (and your roommates have to request you to), then they will try to put you in a room with those roommates. If they can’t (for whatever reason), then you’ll be split up into different rooms. I don’t think they will consider requests like “If I can’t get a single, can I be put with these roommates?” That would be too difficult on their part. If you have people you know you would want to roommate, than I would just recommend you all request a triple with each other as roommates. Otherwise, just pick a single and cross your fingers.

  1. I know they have overflow housing at Revelle, but what if I request a single, and don’t get it. Will they put me into Revelle’s housing, or with ERC’s triple? I want to stay at ERC, even if it isn’t in a single, and I don’t want to get pushed into Revelle’s. I submitted my housing application on April 4th, if that helps you to determine “line” positions. I am just worried that if I don’t get the single I requested, then they automatically put me at the back of the “line.”

I am not sure how the housing requests work at UCSD, but don’t they open up a website portal or something where you get the choose from the remaining rooms? From what I have read, I feel like your housing application date saves a spot, or in other words, a registration time for you. And then at your registration time, you get to pick from the remaining housing options? Kind of like choosing an airplane seat online from the remaining seats they have.

Anyways, if I am completely wrong, please shed some light for my first question. Thanks!

They’re not going to put you at the end of the line because you requested a single. I obviously don’t know how housing does room assignments, but I would imagine they would just go down the list based on when you submitted the housing application. If they see you want a single, they will see if there is a single open. If there is, you get one. If there isn’t, then they will put you in a triple (in ERC). If there is no room in ERC, then you get put in Revelle.

When I was a freshmen, you didn’t get to choose your room. You would submit your preferences in terms of dorm vs. apartment and single vs. double vs. triple (and that little questionnaire about your sleeping habits and such) and then housing does the housing assignments. You will then get your housing assignment once they are released.

In later years, if you still live on campus, then you will get to choose your room. Students are randomly assigned a time when they can sign up for housing, and then you and whoever you want to room with will sign in and choose which room you want. But freshmen year, it’s assigned for you.

Unless they’ve changed things, of course. I graduated almost two years ago, so they might have.
