Should I retake a 2300?

I took the SAT for the first time last month. My scores are 800W, 800CR, 700M. Normally, I’d be fine with a 2300, but I wasn’t expecting as low a math score as I got. I’ll be applying to HYPS/other top tier schools and will probably be majoring in some type of engineering, comp sci, or physics.

No, it’s a waste of time. Take SAT 2s instead if you have time.

Is your proficiency in math shown through other achievements (e.g. Math II Subject Test, AP exams, math contests)? If so, then I would lean towards not retaking. If they aren’t though, I probably would as long as I was confident that I would score better. Normally, I wouldn’t recommend retaking a 2300, but a lack of proficiency in math is a red flag for the majors you’re considering.

Also, what grade are you in?

Depends on the rest of your app, too. My guess is that you could knock off an 800 in math with some studying, and won’t be satisfied with yourself if you don’t try. I probably would do it… Great test scores do help in admissions.

Agree with intparent. If you are top of the game for a stem major and with time, why not try to improve the 700? Even if your math Sat2 is high. This is different than an ordinary fuss over a 2300.

I have an 800 on the SAT II Math 2 and will be taking the AP Cal AB exam this May (on every practice we’ve taken thus far, I’ve gotten a 5). I’m currently a junior.

The main thing I’m worried about with the retake is that even if I get my math score up, my reading/writing may go down. Idk how reproducible double 800s are, honestly.

If you’re good at reading and writing, at least one 800 is easily reproducible. Also, the schools may superscore.

A 700 doesn’t look great for STEM majors. That’s why I retook my 690 M, brought it up to a 750.

Edit: To be clear, I got basically the same score as you my first time. Double 800s and everything.

Why would you waste a perfectly good Saturday morning? You have a 2300 and your 800 Math II shows you can do more advanced math.
