Should I retake a 2310 SAT I?

Whos stupid mr 3.60

???.. I have no idea what your referring to

your quoted gpa

Its 93/100, and I go to an uber competitive private school, and that GPA puts me at valedictorian. Nevertheless, according to you, SAT determines intelligence, and not GPA.

Can someone explain to me what a ‘cutoff’ means in this case and what the ‘cutoff’ supposedly is for Princeton or Yale?

I can show you the post where you said it was 3.60 ish and that you class scores were all 85-90ish. Are you real or just a ■■■■■.

White and unhooked =2360+

Silence of the Lamb?

@orcaaa I’m not applying to HYPS…

Just trying to help out… My mom does work as an admissions officer for a college after all

Ok, definitely ■■■■■.

Sounds like your worried that Carbon might score higher than you clandarkfire.

You score trolls won’t keep us out of the high 2300’s

Damn it!
Your’re on to me.

Isn’t it too late at this point to re-take anyways?
I’m scheduled for the December test with a 2310 (800 M/780 R/730 W)… maybe it won’t be that much of a boost but CalTech is one of my top two places and I’m hoping a higher writing score will set me apart a little bit more. While I understand that there isn’t a big difference between a 2310 and say a 2350, getting in to the ‘top’ colleges is, as I’ve heard here many times, “a big crapshoot” and every little bit helps. If you’re applying to 3-4 hard to get into places, then I think maybe a few extra points will make luck turn your way at at least one of them. Of course, CalTech is my only reach, so this is probably more to calm my nerves than anything else.

Look, scores around 2300 are a close call for whether to retake, especially if there is no imbalance among the three sections. They are excellent scores, and the top schools take people with those scores, including unhooked people. But I think it’s probably true that they take more people with even higher scores. So you should consider retaking if you are aiming at highly selective schools AND if there is a good reason to think you might score higher AND you don’t have something significantly better to do on test day. Even if all those things are true, the decision is not a no-brainer either way.

Where are your scores in relation to the national & state percentiles? If they are at 99% you cannot do any better so do not retake. I could be wrong but I think a 2400 gets you in the 99% too. Does anyone know for sure?

A 2310 makes your application competitive and that’s what you want. Focus on your schoolwork and leave decisions beyond your control to the gods of fate!

Looks like more and more people are on to you low score trolls.

Hi All,

I’ve decided not to take the SAT again. I think I could do much better than a 2310, but its my own fault I never really studied for it (especially the Math section - I did do 2-3 hours of study for Writing) and thus scored a 710 in Math. Colleges know I’m a Humanities student and I’m definitely not applying to MIT or Caltech, the only schools I feel where a 710 in Math would eliminate you. Also, although I am absolutely positive I will always score an 800 on CR, I could drop 10 or 20 points in Writing to a 780, so even if I raise Math to a 780, I feel its best to have 2 800s and one low score.

In hindsight, while I’m proud that I got the 2310 with minimal study, it would have been more prudent for me to study Math before taking the test. My top colleges won’t be impressed by my score, but it won’t hurt so oh well. I would like to think that I’m more impressive outside the realm of standardized tests.

For everyone else - best way to study is to find the ‘Writing Questions’ thread on CC. Kids here spend too much time (I may have spent too little but anything more than 10-15 hours is gratuitous in my opinion) preparing for the SATs, so you know any questions they don’t get are the toughest you’ll encounter.

Good luck everyone :)

If you’re confident about a 780 on math take that motherf$cker again and get a 2380 superscored

@ILoveMyMom, I think its - at least for me - not worth the preparation. I would need to spend at least 4 hours on the Math + the actual test, which I would rather spend working on my non-profit or reading books that interest me.

Thanks for the vote of confidence though, and sorry I vacillated!

I wish the SAT was a better test that tests real stuff. Even the Critical Reading, supposedly the toughest part, isn’t as hard as it could be. The SAT tests your ability not to make silly mistakes - a worthwhile skill but not something which should count for your college application. I’d rather they use APs and SAT IIs, but made them significantly harder so 1 or 2 silly mistakes don’t make a world of difference.
