Should I retake a 750 SAT Math II? I plan on majoring in Comp Sci/ Engineering, and my hope is to attend a top 20 school in either field of study.

Also, if I were to retake it and get a 800, would it show on my transcript that I got a 750?

If it were any other subject test I would tell you a 750 is perfectly wonderful score to be happy with. But this is the Math II. It has such a steep curve (43/50 correct is often times a perfect 800) that a 750 means you missed 10-15 questions. Considering you want to go to a MIT/Caltech caliber school for such a math-heavy major, and that the median 50th percentile of your competition has 800s, you may want to think about re-taking it. I agree with billcsho, only retake if you think you have a high chance of getting that 800 the second time.

MiddKid86 is totally right, every school is different. For the most part, and take this with a grain of salt, schools tend to allow score choice a lot with subject tests even if they don’t with the normal SAT scores (Stanford, for example). Check every school’s individual policy.

Hey, I got the same Math II score when I took it the first time around and I brought it up to an 800 when I took it a month later. So I’d say go for it!

I sent my both my Math II scores out because let’s face it, a 750 on a test that lets you miss 8+ for an 800 isn’t the best score. Colleges will understand, I bet. If you were taking a 790 on the other hand…

In the same boat as you. I’m not applying to any powerhouse STEM-only schools, but I am applying to some very selective ones for Engineering. Not sure if my 750 will detract too much from my application.

I saw a quote somewhere by MIT saying that after a certain score on an SAT II test (750), MIT doesn’t even care what you get. Anything between 750 and 800 is all the same to them. And if MIT doesn’t care, then I doubt most other schools that practice holistic admissions will either.

Go ahead and take it again, but don’t stress over it because your score is already fine, even with the steep Math II curve. Try not to spend too much time studying for it and focus on other things as well.
