I need some help deciding if it's wise to retake my SAT scores. I've already taken it three times, one for each year from freshman to junior, and one ACT. It wasn't until this year, as a junior, that I found out that colleges frown upon taking it four or more times, and I'm worried that I already killed a lot of my chances for getting into college. All of these times I didn't really study before I took the SAT. I had planned to take it again this fall as a senior and actually study for it this summer but I'm really scared that it will make me look worse.

I hope to try to get into one of the UCs, especially Berkley or UCLA possibly for an anthropology degree and an East Asian minor or major. I read that all UC schools want all scores sent in.

Please help!

Freshman - CR: 460 ; M: 540 ; W: 490 ; C: 1490

Sophomore - CR: 590 ; M: 560 ; W: 540 ; C: 1690

Junior - CR: 620 ; M: 640 ; W: 630 ; C: 1890

I dont’ think you should retake it because, as you said, a lot of colleges frown upon taking the SAT more than three times. Since your SAT scores aren’t the best, focus on improving and strengthening other parts of your resume to offset your scores. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to get into Berkley or UCLA, but you might be able to get into one of the other UCs.

Were you advised by a teacher counselor to start taking it as a Freshman? If so, bad advice. I know in NYC alot of schools push the PSAT as early as 9th grade but not the real deal.

It was my mom. She had seen how bad my older sister did and thought that if I took it early it would improve my score. I was skeptical of counselors back then because my sister had just recently graduated and had a pretty bad experience with them.

Well, there’s definately an upward trend, which is good…but I would strongly suggest you step away from the College Board. Maybe the ACT is your test? I don’t know whether the UCs would frown upon adding that to the mix…but if you really knocked it out of the park with a 30+ it might grease the wheel a bit. And as was previously suggested, work on strengthening your other areas…Good luck!
