Last March I took the SAT and was a bit disappointed with my scores. I made a 2040 composite: 720 in reading, 730 in writing, and 590 in math. However, I did better on the ACT, with a 32 composite, 36 reading, 36 writing, 27 math, and 27 science. I didn't really do any prep for either test. I'm not looking to get into any Ivies, but I am looking at more selective schools, like Wesleyan and Vassar. My GPA is a 4.43 or something (4.0 unweighted) and I have over 100 volunteer hours. I feel like my ACT scores are high enough to at least give me a fighting chance of getting into a selective school, but I'm really ashamed of my SAT scores (especially in math) and don't really want to put them on an application. My question is, would it look bad if I only listed ACT scores on applications, or should I retake the SAT? I know I could definitely improve if I actually prepared this time.

Even the ACT shows a large discrepancy between math/science and the other scores… but I sure hope you don’t want to major in something math-heavy. Despite this, I’d say that Vassar is a reach, with Wesleyan better if you don’t submit either score.

@catria What’s wrong with a 32? It’s extremely high, and well within the 50% range of both schools. If the student isn’t interested in math and science, it shouldn’t matter; she is clearly an adept reader and writer.

You don’t need to retake the SAT. your ACT score speaks for itself.

In my mind Vassar is the sort of school that scrutinizes ACT subscores much like it would SAT subscores…
