On my first ACT, last June, I scored a 34 (34-E, 32-M, 35-R, 34-S, 8-W breakdown). This was supposed to be a baseline test, going in cold, no prep, but I never expected to score so well. I'm wondering whether or not I should retake the ACT with a study plan focusing on improving that math and writing score. If so, what would be the best study materials to use? Thanks in advance for anyone who answers.

Do you think you could score higher? 34 is a great score. A 35 wouldn’t help you THAT much. What kind of colleges are you planning to apply to that are competitive enough to constitute you wanting to raise it to 35/36?

There are plenty of study books out there, you just have to find which one is your favorite. Princeton Review, the one released by the actual act itself, Barron’s etc.

It’s more of a personal question you have to ask yourself… do you want a higher score? Keep in mind 34 is in the 99th percentile for ACT scores. If you do want a higher score than yes it will help to prepare for it and then go back in.

Good answer ^

I would definitely take it again.

It doesn’t hurt to take it again as ACT is score choice but unless you really care about the essay, it isn’t necessary. The difference between a 34 and a 35 is minimal.

Congrats on your score. However, you should never take a test cold. Why do you want to waste money and time? You can get your baseline score from practice test. Imagine if you have practiced before the test and you should have done with it by now. 34 is good, but it may be marginal for some merit scholarships. It is a good sign that you can actually perform better than that. If you have time, you should give it another try (after practice). If you don’t have time, then 34 is good enough for most schools for admission.

i would totally take it again!! i took it cold my first time and scored a 30, then after 1 week with the barron’s act 36 book (literally did nothing but plow through the book the week before the test, then took 2 practice tests) i’d raised it to a 35. seriously, that book does wonders, and with your score as high as it already is, you don’t really have much to lose. i’m sure you could score even better if you get that book
