I took the ACT plus writing a couple weeks ago and have gotten a 30. Now, I personally think that’s a pretty great score. However, I really want to go to Davis.
Now here is my problem: my ACT is definitely in the range for Davis, but I don’t have the best GPA. Good but again, not the best for a UC.
Unweighted: 3.67
Weighted: 3.89
I’m in the last stretch of my high school career (Junior) and have one last semester to get up my GPA. However, considering one of my APs is Physics, I doubt I’ll be able to get that A and change my GPA significantly.
Should I retake the ACT and shoot for a higher score like a 32 or 33 to make up for my not as good GPA?
Retaking the ACT is always a good idea, it can never harm. If you do manage to do worse, you don’t have to provide that score. Also, possibly consider taking the SAT, a high a score on that test might help make up for the GPA.
The advice in post #1 is NOT universally true. Some universities require all ACT (and/or SAT) resuts be submitted, do not allow ScoreChoice, and do not super-score. This obviously means that a lower score will be detrimental. I do not know what UCD’s policies are, but I definitely know @butleraa133’s post is not always correct.
They may look at the test, but most universities will consider the higher score over the lower, also on many admissions sites for colleges they will tell you whether they want all scores and if they seen a lower score as detrimental. Cornell, specifically, looked at all my scores, but did not take my lower scores into account. Check Davis’ site.
