Should I retake the SAT?

I’m applying to college in the next few months.

I did the SAT for the first time a year ago and got 1950.

All my other grades are As and my GPA is a 4.

Should I retake the SAT or just stay with the 1950?

What colleges are you looking at? Look at the common data set of the colleges you are applying to and see if you fall within their 50th percentile.
What was the breakdown of each section? Have you taken (or do you need to take) SAT subject tests?

@rdeng2614 Mostly Southern California colleges. According to the College Board I fall into the top percentiles and my SAT scores are great, but I’m wondering whether I’d have a better chance at scoring a scholarship or more financial aid with a better SAT.

Breakdown:
Reading: 640
Math: 600
Writing: 700

I think I can definitely increase my math score since I did a year of a hard math course (though not for the SAT).

There’s no harm in doing so! You’re fine as is for your reach schools, but if you would like to improve your score and think you have the potential to do so, I advise doing so! In the long run it could, as you said, make you more applicable for financial aid, scholarships, etc. It could also enable you to apply for any top-tier schools you may have been thinking of as dream schools. If you truly believe you can increase your score, I say go for it!

I’d try–even getting CR and M over 650 could be a real help to you.

Then yes, you should definitely retake, but make sure you can handle studying for the SAT, writing essays, schoolwork, and possibly extracurricular activities at the same time.

Like others have said, retake it only if you’re able to afford it, both monetarily and time wise.
A good thing to do would be to check what merit aid the colleges you are looking into offer. Some scholarships have test score cut offs, others emphasize leadership or research or such things. Look into which scholarships you want to apply to, and proceed accordingly. Congrats and good luck!

You should retake it for sure. Idk what reach schools ur applying to, but try to get your Math to a 700 or at least a 650. Plus, the fact that you haven’t taken the SAT in a year means that you’ve probably grown in the 3 areas tested in the SAT, so you could get a much higher score this time around.

@sukhtheduke1 I agree that I’ve probably improved during the year. The thing is that I only have a month to study for it since I’m gonna do the Oct 3rd one. If I do a later one I won’t be able to study as school will get in the way. I don’t know if a month will be enough.

No harm in trying though…I have money saved up so that’s not a problem.
