I am in need of advice. I got a 2210 (760 CR, 800 M, 650 W) on the January SAT. I know this isn't a bad score, I'm happy with my math and critical reading, but my writing isn't that great. I got an 8 on the essay and a 67 on the MC. I'm a junior and I plan on applying to some Ivy leagues. Would my writing score put me at a significant disadvantage? Do I need to retake?

Many Ivy leagues don’t consider the writing section as heavily as the math and critical reading sections. As long as you show your writing skills through your admissions essay, your score shouldn’t be a problem. You will most likely score lower in CR+M if you retake.

Your scores are almost exactly how S1 scored. At this point it comes down more to your other parts of your resume.

retake, writing is the easiest to improve. if I can get a 790 on writing you can sure as hell do it too

It might be good to retake it just to see if you can improve at all. Study hard and practice, and if you can improve your score, it will certainly work in your favor in admissions! Don’t fret about it if the score doesn’t change much, however, as 2210 is a good score in itself.

If you are looking at attending an Ivy league, your writing skills are going to need to be very good. However, before you fret about your writing score, see if the schools you want to apply to even consider the writing portion of the SAT. Many do not.

If you are in/have taken AP history or AP English, these classes really help you prepare for writing.

Don’t rush to retake the SAT (unless you are significantly beyond the math). Maybe take it in June or next Oct/Nov.

You might also want to consider taking the ACT. You can work on your writing while not compromising the already great SAT score.

I have a similar question… January 2014 test: my junior son’s writing score was only 550…he got 1430 Math/CR. He wants to study science or engineering…should he retake. This was his first SAT. Thanks.

My kid also got 67 on MC. It’s like 5 wrong.
Since he scored 11 on essay, he ended up with 720.
Should he worry?

I would retake it because most colleges (even the elite ones) Superscore. Also, if you manage an 800 on Math and a 760 on reading, you should be able to keep both of those scores above 740 without much effort so that, even if you send all of your scores to colleges, any decreases in those areas won’t really hurt you.

Writing isn’t too hard to improve and I found sparknotes to be a very useful source. Also, keep in mind that colleges do look at your SAT essay to see how you write under timed conditions. Writing may not be the most important section, but it is there for a reason.
