Should I risk it?

The final postmark deadline for the Stanford app is Dec. 15. However, on their website they say “The entire University, including the Admission Office, will be closed the weeks of December 20 and December 27. All University offices will reopen on January 3, 2005”

If that’s the case, would they notice if I sent in my app late? Or would my app just sit in their mailbox for however many weeks they’re off on vacation?

And exactly what does postmark mean? If I drop in my app in the mailbox at 11:30 pm on Wednesday night, would it still be postmarked Wednesday? Or does it have to be sent by a certain time?

No, it must be at the post office before they close, and you need to ask the postal worker to postmark it while you watch. In large cities there is usually one post office open until 8:00 p.m. (or maybe later). If your city has a large airport it is usually somewhere near the airport or near the downtown area. However, in smaller cities your post office probably closes at 5:00 p.m. (or 2:00 p.m. on Saturday). You might be able to look up the closing time online, or call or go by and ask what their hours are.

I assume they will actually look at the postmark on the envelope to see if your application was mailed on time.

Don't risk it.

....Never mind, already answered.

Erm, a few more questions:

When you postmark mail on a certain day, does it get sent out that very day? Or does it just sit around and go out in the morning?

Would mail shipped out on a Thursday morning arrive at the same time as mail postmarked on Wednesday afternoon arrive at the same time?

And how does overnight mail work? If i sent in something Thursday morning overnight, would it arrive Friday?

Lastly, mail actually has a stamp on it telling what time it as shipped out?! Nooo!! Say it ain't so!

if it says postmarked, they STAMP the envelope with the date. it doesnt matter when it gets sent out its stamped.

yes it has a time telling when it is shipped out. postmarked = stamp

You should probably call your local post office to get those answered. It may vary from post office to post office.

Yes, mail actually has a stamp on it which indicates when the PO processed it. That's why you need to watch the clerk actually postmark the envelope. Otherwise they may throw it in the bin and it might not get postmarked until after their closing time, so it would have the next day's date on it.

Generally the mail goes out that day, as postal workers work 24/7, but it may sit on a truck or in a post office for hours before it starts to get processed. Especially at this time of year when there is such a large volume of mail, you need to make sure it's postmarked correctly. Stanford won't care when it arrives in their office, just when you got it postmarked.

Overnight mail should arrive the next day (if it's mailed in the morning), but there's not way to guarantee that. And, there's no need to spend the extra money on overnight mail if it only has to be postmarked. Now if it says the mail has to be "received" by a certain date (I've seen scholarships with this requirement), then overnight mail would be useful.

Argh, well thanks for the info. I guess I won't have extra time to work on the app =(.

This is gonna be a lo-o-o-o-o-ng night. And I have FIVE tests tomorrow, lol!

i don't think it matters that much that you have it in exactly on or before the postmark date, they're not going to throw it out if you are a couple days late. my friend just got into cornell after sending in her app 2 weeks late.

though cornell is different than stanford...

I'm in a similar situation, with Stanford's app and tests tomorrow (lo-o-o-o-o-ng night indeed).

I was wondering though, if the the deadline only really applies to our student info forms. I can finish that online by 11:59 pm. If I have my recs and transcript sent a bit late (next week at the latest), am I still good?

hey quick question.
anyone knows if university of chicago's deadline on 1st jan the postmark deadline or the receive materials deadline?
thanks.

from what I've read and heard, those are postmark deadlines. ideally everything should be sent together, but it's not like they start reading everything the day after nor will they throw away your app if it's postmarked a day or two late. so theres probably a little flexibility with the dates depending on what college. but even if you are missing some materials, and they never receive it, they will notify you.

actually, i'm not sure though
