Should I say that I founded my school's debate team or that I became the captain later?

I founded my school’s debate team freshman year and have coached it for 3 years now (I’m currently a junior). Does it sound better to say on my college application that I founded the team or that I worked my way up to become its captain junior year? My high school is very good (consistently ranked top 5 in Massachusetts) but will not even having a debate team before I founded it make it sound like a non competitive high school? Thanks for all your input, I highly appreciated them!

both?

Because I am founded the team, I am captain by default since freshman year so it’s one or the other.

So…it wouldn’t really be truthful to say you “worked your way up” now, would it?

Founder––founder is a) more truthful and b) looks better. Everyone these days is captain and president, but fewer are founders.

Ex: For my golf team, I wrote “Founder and Captain of Varsity Golf Team” in the Common App Leadership description area.

Yeah, what ^^ said, for sure.

I agree. I’ll say that I was the founder. Thanks everyone!
