Should I seek a congressional nomination?

Hi all, I am an incoming first year student at the University of Virginia, but I have been interested in going to the United States Naval Academy for the past several months, and I needed advice for nominations. I know I will secure a Presidential Nomination, since my Dad is an academy grad and had a career in the Navy. I am already going to a top tier school, I had an excellent HS GPA and very good SAT scores. I was also a strong athlete and have done my fair share of extracurriculars. Since I am not yet completely sure I want to attend the Academy, and how much time congressional nominations take, I was wondering if it was worth going for Congressional Noms, or if I should just rely on the Presidential. Thank you.

I can’t answer your question but I believe UVa has NROTC on campus so that may be another option.

happy1, thanks for the reply, but I would rather Commission through the Academy

Why didn’t you apply there to start?

Although I was interested to a certain extent before because I am in a Navy family, I only recently decided that the Academy might be the right fit for me. During my HS senior year when I wanted to apply, it was too late.

You should apply to as many nomination sources as you can. Just because you have a Presidential nomination doesn’t mean that you will get an appointment from it. There are only 100 appointments allowed in that category and on average 700-800 nominations. Apply to both of your senators and your congressman as well at the VP nomination. You shouldn’t be concerned about how much time it will take if you are committed to USNA.
