Should I skip FAFSA Parent Financial & Asset Questions - Out of State

I am a low income $30000 student in Virginia,
but applying to several out of state schools, and have heard that here are some states that require the asset information even when a student is not required to provide it.

I am wondering if because of this I should put in this information, or is it possible to omit it for now and then later be able to put it in if some of the schools I’ve applied to out of state require it.

You are either required to provide parent financial information or you are not. It doesn’t matter if you are applying as an out-of-state student. All that matters is how you answer the questions in step 3 of FAFSA (questions 45 through 57).

The states that require asset info even if FAFSA does not are for state grants and I don’t know that any state gives grant money to non-residents. If you’re filling it out online, the software will skip or include those questions based on what state you’re a resident of. My son had to fill everything out as a resident of MN even though FAFSA doesn’t require it for federal aid.

Fill in the info for the questions on your FAFSA. If you aren’t required to fill it in…then the questions won’t likely appear.

And if you complete the FAFSA and are eligible for simplified needs or auto $0, you will get it anyway…assuming you meet the eligibility.

Do you have a LOT of assets? If not, why would this matter anyway?

Just remember, if you are applying to Profile schools, you WILL need to provide those assets. There is no auto $0 EFC or simplified needs test for the Profile.

The extra info is based on the state you live in, not where you are going to school.
