I can't decide whether I should get braces or not. The gaps in my bottom teeth make me feel self concious when speaking. The only problem is money. I feel like it will be extremely irresponsible to take money out of my (dwindling) college fund to vainly fix my teeth. But I want to feel confident!

Thoughts? Braces or no braces? I'll be a sophomre this fall btw

If getting braces results in future borrowing to pay for college then I would say no. The interest will really add up. If you can do it and pay for college without borrowing then yes.

You can always get braces later when you can afford it.

Thanks, I really don’t want to get myself into a financial tight spot. I’ll look around for a cheaper orthodontist or give up on the idea all together.

I wouldn’t normally advocate taking money from a college fund for something cosmetic, however I feel as if braces can really boost confidence. You should check with at least 4 orthodontist for an evaluation. You may get 4 very different proposals and a wide variety of prices. Some offer very low payment plans with little or no interest. If you have extra space in your mouth you could possibly do the correction with retainers instead of braces at a reduced cost. At least get some estimates so you can decide based on fact. In many areas of the U.S. braces are almost a given for kids anymore. Having obviously crooked teeth can really make you feel as if you stand out.

Another thing to consider is the time factor. Whatever your decision, try to make sure that you can complete the treatment plan with the same orthodontist. Will you be able to make the appointments over your school breaks? If you commute to school this shouldn’t be an issue but if you go away to school it could be,

Check to see what dental coverage you have for braces. Usually coverage for braces is poor or not covered.
