I am about to start my second year in college at the University of Houston (UH). To be honest, I never wanted to be at UH. When I was a senior in high school, I got accepted to 5 different schools, some in Texas (UT Austin and Baylor) and two colleges out of Texas. UH was my last choice to go to because I did not want to stay in Houston anymore and I wanted to be independent. Eventually, I chose UH not because I wanted to go there, but because my dad told me to go there and it was the least expensive college out of the 5.

I hated my freshman year. I told myself I should give UH a chance, so I went out and joined a few clubs and tried to meet some new people. But it wasn't great. The clubs barely met, and the people that I talked to didn't really seemed that interested in talking to me.

By the start of the my second semester, I decided to apply as a transfer student to UT Austin because things just weren't working out here.There were times when I woke up and wondered whether or not I should go to class, but I eventually told myself that if I work hard, then I can get to where I want. I stopped logging onto facebook because it was hard to see all of my friends have such a great time while I was stuck at a place I didn't want to be. I sent my application to UT Austin, but I just got an email back saying that I was not admitted. I was very shocked that I got rejected since I was admitted there the first time. My question is, should I still try to apply to UT Austin again during my sophomore year in college, or should I just suck it up and stay at UH for 4 years. Thanks for the help and advice.

" I stopped logging onto facebook because it was hard to see all of my friends have such a great time while I was stuck at a place I didn’t want to be."
That is a great way to start. Facebook was also a huge distraction for me. Seeing friends drive nice cars their parents bought while partying the rest of the time makes school seem mundane. It shows character and commitment to getting out of your situation. Definitely keep your gpa high and apply again your sophomore year.

thank you so much. I will definitely try

@bonehead180 What major are you trying to be admitted for and what was your first year GPA? surprised they sent out a denial email. What did the email say? I’m so sorry and never give up on your dreams! I think you should apply again!

I am studying chemical engineering right now, although I am really considering switching majors. I applied to UT and chose chemical engineering as my first major and mathematics for my second major. GPA was a 3.4.

This was their email:

"Thank you for your interest in The University of Texas at Austin. We regret that after a careful review of applications, we are not able to offer you admission at this time.

Each year, the Office of Admissions faces the difficult task of selecting for admission a limited number of students from a pool of extremely qualified applicants. We use a holistic review process to examine the range of each applicant’s demonstrated abilities, achievements and interests. On average, about three times the number of students we can accommodate will apply.

Although we are not able to offer you admission this cycle, you are welcome to apply again in the future."

I stopped reading after the second sentence. Just too painful to read on after that.

no offense but chemE at UT is very competitive you won’t get into ChemE or Cockrell for that matter with a 3.4 , apply with a 3.75+ next year and have a backup major just incase you dont get into Chem E

I realize that, which is why I don’t really feel like doing chemical engineering anymore. I don’t enjoy chemistry as much as I did before.

@bonehead180 wow I am so sorry I wish you the best in your future endeavors and get that GPA up and try again next year! it never hurts to try. did you just send in the remainder of your 30 hours within the last few weeks

@txgirl9457

No, I sent them in a few days after the last day of school.

@bonehead180 wow so they reviewed your application very fast and made a decision. Maybe if you take a few basic courses at your local community college over the summer and receive high grades you could have a base for an appeal? saying that you have improved and maybe even ask if you could be considered for a different major! just an idea

I’ll try, but I doubt it will make a difference. Thanks for the suggestions

Absolutely. Go where you will be happy. You will never get those 4 years of your life back. Do you want to remember your 4 years of COLLEGE as unhappy years. I asked for advice and looked at what I wanted. I gave up a full ride to a&m and fought hard to get into ut because I wanted to be a longhorn. Nothing would make me happier than wearing that burnt orange proudly. Smiles come to my face whenever I think about how soon I will be on that 40 acres. So absolutely no amount of money can compare to being truly happy. Forgot uh come to ut. You will never regret that choice.

Also choose undeclared or school of undergraduates for second choice. So easy to get into. And you can internal transfer later

@135pipe

Where you a transfer student that got in to UT? And if I do apply to transfer again, don’t I need a major to get in? I thought you had to have major declared by the end of your sophomore year. I don’t know if I can choose undeclared because I will be a sophomore this upcoming year.

Transfers can get accepted as undecided, I got in as undecided.

However I read somewhere that the 24 hour residency does not apply to transfers as long as you have all the other requirements of the school your trying to transfer in completed. @bonehead180n

No freshmen 2014 @bonehead180

@135pipe Oh nice. Wish I could be in your position ha.

@bonehead180 @135pipe if i was bonehead applying to transfer to UT next year i would not apply undecided unless you want to spend an extra year at UT cause junior year is when all the major related classes start
