Hi everyone, I've got a question to ask concerning SAT optional schools...
if a school says that international students are not required to submit their SAT score, but are recommended to do it, should I, who does not have a good score, send the score or not?
ps. I've already taken the TOEFL and I got 106 on ibt.

Well, it’s all up to you to decide. If the score was decent, I would say that a few extra information is always a plus. However, you say you are not satisfied with it, so I guess you should decide on your own.

By the way, what exactly is your score? If it is low because of the CR, colleges will have in mind that you aren’t a native speaker and you are not supposed to be brilliant in a section where even native speakers often fail.

thanks for your reply,
my SAT score is really low, I didn’t have much time to prepare for it since I was really busy with school at that time…
math 540
critical reading 540
verbal 500
what do you think?

Why don’t you consider retaking it? You shouldn’t give up that easy! :)

the thing is that I won’t have much time now either to learn for that… Isn’t SAT something that you prepare for for a really long time? I’m thinking to apply for Fall 2010…is there still time?
do you know if my score is really going to affect my admissions? and what if I didn’t send it, would it lower the chances of being admitted??

I’m not going to deceive you - the SAT is a serious thing indeed. It is true that one needs to prepare both academically and mentally. Also, it is true that most international applicants’ scores are higher scores than yours. However, I do believe that SATs are not everything and a person cannot (and should not) be evaluated only by some numbers.

So, although you may say that it is a useless advice, my opinion is that you should do one of the following things:

1) do your best to prepare for, say, November SAT
2) trust colleges when they claim that your not presenting any SATs won’t hurt your application

Of course, you can show your SATs and hope for the best. It is really a decision that you should make by yourself. After all, it is your life and dreams we are talking about. I believe that “Follow your heart” is not a cliche

thank you very much!
one more question:
and what if the college says I am recommended but not required to show the score, would it hurt my application if I didn’t do it, since they “recommend” me to do it??

Which colleges are you talking about specifically?

SUNY at Buffalo, Middlebury, and Northeastern

Middlebury requires that you submit either the SAT I, 3 SAT IIs, or the ACT. Have you taken any other standardized tests?

nope…school keeps me busy with its works, so I’ve been preparing for tests outside of the school only on holidays…
what I actually wanted to know is, would it hurt me if I don’t send my scores???

Well in Middlebury’s case, if you don’t submit your SAT I scores, then you’ll need to submit ACT or SAT II scores. So you might want to consider taking one of those other tests.

What are your grades like? Does your school rank, and, if so, what is your rank? What ECs do you have? If the rest of your application is super strong, then I wouldn’t worry too much about not submitting scores. If the rest of your application is weak, then you may need to come up with a different strategy.

School keeps everyone busy. Especially when one is an international. Retake SAT. Since the scores are low, you have a lot of room for improvement.

hmm yes, I’m thinking about retaking too now, so does anyone has some good SAT practicing tips? i’d appreciate it…;)

Buy barron’s math, CR and writing review books.they are quite good.also, buy princeton’s cracking the SAT.this book works wonders for an average student.

Check out Barron’s for math and Gruber’s for a vocabulary list. Good luck.
