Should I take ACT or retake new SAT

I scored a 1450 on the new SAT last year as a junior, but am considering either retaking the SAT or taking an ACT (First time). I am considering selective schools such as Stanford and Johns Hopkins. I have been getting scores of 33+ on the practice tests offered online, but of course they are just practice tests. What do y’all recommend? Is a 1450 score even considered to be competitive at these colleges?

1450 is lower than average. Take the ACT as a 33 would put you in the middle 50% range for most top schools. Aim for a 34.

1450 is not a bad score, actually. You could retake the SAT, but do whichever test you feel more comfortable with.

Since you will be applying to schools this fall, I would suggest taking the SAT again. Many (most?) students see an increase in their score the second time.

Usually I would suggest trying both tests, see which you do better on or appeals to you more, and taking that test a 2nd time if necessary. However, it might not make sense to try to do that during the fall application period (just adds more stress you don’t need), and 1450 is a good first time score. If your SAT score goes up to 1490, that’s equivalent to a 33 ACT.
