So I’m currently enrolled in the 10th grade and taking Honors Geometry. I find the course really easy and I’m getting A’s in it. Last year I took Algebra 1 Honors and I also found the course really easy and finished with an A. A lot of my friends are already in Algebra 2 and I feel left out, because we’re all the same level of smart. I’d really like to take Algebra 2 online to get ahead and be a little bit above average than course level. If I do take the course I will take it on FLVS. Should I start taking the course? How rigorous is it? Will I get an A? Will it be better to take the course and get ahead or stay at grade level? (which at my school is deemed as bad as my school is really competitive)
I really, really wouldn’t.
Right now it’s still a lot of review. It gets a whole lot more difficult.
I would get over the whole “feeling left out” thing pretty fast. You’re not your friends; you don’t have to be taking the same classes they are.
Also you need to confirm with your school if taking it would even give you credit otherwise you might still need to take it through the school. However lots of students throughout the country start high school in algebra 1 and still get into good schools like ivy league.
my school does give the credit; a requirement for graduation is to take an online class.
Algebra 2 isn’t the math I’d choose to rush through- I found it much harder and it had much more information to take in- if you want to go through a math quickly, maybe do Pre-Calculus over the summer after Alg 2, just because it’s mostly review of A2.
As a freshman who is currently taking Geometry Honors and Alg 2 Honors, it isn’t that hard. Take this with a grain of salt though, since this is anecdotal and off of my personal experience, and since everyone is not the same. Dealing with the homework is probably the hardest though, so if you prepare yourself for maybe 1-2 hours of homework every night, and several hours of studying before an assessment, you will be fine. Don’t do this if you are a procrastinator or are not good at doing long assignments though. You may have to dedicate the entire weekend catching up though, since your Alg 1 skills are likely rusty if you still decide to do this.
I’d also say Alg 2 compared to Alg 1 is harder and geometry, but again, anecdotal, since I’ve heard some people do better in geometry than alg 2 and vice versa.
Also wanted to add that the classes move fairly fast compared to standard, maybe 2x or 3x faster, and you are given harder quizzes and tests.
I think the second half of Geometry was the hardest for me. Algebra 2 so far is nowhere as easy as Geometry was for me so I wouldn’t take it over the summer.
