Should I take an online APES course?

Hey,

So I'm a rising freshman (don't tune me out yet), and I'm considering taking AP Environmental Science via virtual school. I have three reasons for wanting to take this class. Firstly, I have a genuine interest in the class (I looked at some AP Exam questions, and they align with things I do and are interested in) Secondly, I feel I need to challenge myself to make sure I'm prepared for high school, as in my high school, you go from 1 AP freshman year and 1 AP sophomore year to 4-5 junior and senior years. Obviously that isn't a gradual increase in AP classes, so I want to get more APs in to help me get the hang of taking AP tests and such. Thirdly, I believe I can do well in this class and get at least a 4 on the exam because I am very science oriented and I consider science to be my best subject. Furthermore, I've heard that APES is one of the easier APs, and that's what I'm looking for.

I could take APES the Spring of freshman year, the fall of sophomore year, or the spring of sophomore year. AP classes aren't offered by online school in the summer. I don't feel I can do it in junior and senior year since I would already have a tough courseload. So, what are your thoughts? Thanks :)

You seem wise for a freshman. I commend you for wanting to further your studies. I think you should. I’ve had some experience with this- as I took AP Psychology online last year. Just manage your time and you should be ok I’m sure.

Thanks. Any other input? If I decide to take it, I will start in January. Here is my freshman schedule:

Geo H
AP Gov
Chinese 2 H
Symphony Orchestra
Lit H
Bio H

Will I have too much work? Symphony orchestra is an easy course, but I have to practice a lot to get a good grade. Same with Chinese 2 H, Lit H, and Bio H. I sort of struggle with math and social studies (last year they were my worst grades; Math was 95 and Social Studies was 96).

How comfortable are you self-studying? Doing labs at home? Does the online class offer some sample AP tests and prep or will you have to do much of this yourself?

This is a breakdown of scores for this AP tests this year which shows it is not that common to do well on this test, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Although AP Gov is a challenging class, your schedule doesn’t look too challenging to squeeze an extra AP in. If I were you, I would definitely go ahead with it. Personally, I have taken 5 AP classes and 1 honors class online (including APES) and have earned fives on all of the AP exams I have taken. As long as you are motivated and make a pace chart ahead of time to finish on schedule, you will do great. Good luck!
