Should I take AP classes even if the college I want to go to doesn't count the AP exam?

If i get all A’s and B’s for both years and good SAT scores will I still be able to get into a good college and not a community. This will show huge amounts of improvement taking challenging classes and doing good in them. Maybe that will change colleges minds.

Shoot, I thought you had 3.7, not 2.7… that changes things!
You can get into a good college but you need to get grades in the B+ to A range in every class now on, which means doing the work required, participating in class, doing the extra credit…

Great im kinda screwed. Next year I will work harder hopefully I do get into a good college. I currently attend a magnet/tech school.

It really depends on what you consider a good college. If you at looking at CA schools, for CSU’s you need an Eligibilty index of 3502 for SAT or 842 for ACT. To calculate your EI:

(CSU GPA x 800)+(SAT math + CR) or (CSU GPA x200)+(ACT compositex10)

For UC’s you need a minimum UC GPA of 3.4 to apply and this may you only get you into UC Merced or Riverside. You need to really see what your GPA will be at the end of Junior year. CSU’s and UC’s only use 10-11 grades in their GPA calculation which may help you. Senior grades will not be considered unless you target private schools. Just work and get that GPA up. Good luck and repost next year.

I cant believe how bad a low grade can bring your GPA down

Yes I will also one more question. is weighted or unweighted GPA better?

Schools will use your unweighted GPA since there are different weighting systems at different HS’s. The CSU’s and UC’s have their own weighting system for their GPA which is capped at 8 semesters of UC approved AP classes for OOS applicants. If you check the common datasets for any school’s of interest, the GPA stated is out of the 4.0 scale meaning unweighted. It is ok to post your weighted, but the unweighted is the one that counts.

Ohhh geez so then yeah 2.7 is really bad. Well thanks for the advice

Work hard this year and see how much you can increase your GPA. Take the PSAT/PLAN to help prepare you for the SAT or ACT. Once you have your test scores and GPA at the end of Junior year, you will be in a better position to form a realistic college list. There are colleges where you will have a chance at an acceptance, just keep an open mind and do plenty of research.

Thank you  you are really helpful!
