I am currently living in texas and this state has a program that if you are in the top 10% you can be admitted to almost any public college in texas. In freshman year my weighted numerical gpa was 109. I took all preap classes that had a 1.2 multiplier. My normal gpa was 3.6. Anyways this year i am taking algebra 2 preap and world history ap. I will also be taking english 2 pap, chemistry pap, and spanish 4 ap next semester. World history ap is said to be the hardest class in sophomore year. Currently I have an 87 in world history ap and 84 in algebra 2 pap. I am a little worried now since i want to be in top 10% but getting B's is not helping. I can still drop out and take regular classes. What do you guys recommend? Do colleges want to you to take ap classes or be in top 10%?

To be honest, they want both. But wouldn’t you have to take AP classes to be in the top 10%?

Top 10% is a pretty hard and fast criteria at a lot of schools including Texas public ones. if you miss it but have a really rigorous load, that can make it tough to get into selective schools. do what you have to to maintain top 10% first and foremost.

Assuming you can maintain top 10% rank, rigor becomes really important. smaller selective colleges generally prefer the occasional B in a more rigorous course to all As in easier ones. C’s are a different matter though and should be avoided even if it means dropping to a lighter load.
