Should I take AP Physics B? Is it a good idea? I was originally in chemistry but the teacher I was going to have doesn't teach so I dropped it. I will be taking pre-calc concurrently and the pre-calc and ap physics b teacher is the same. The course will be new though so next year will be the first time my school is offering it. Everybody likes the teacher though! Do I need some kind of calculus knowledge to be in ap physics b? Also I am from Washington and I want to go to a college in California and want to go into the architecture/medical field if that makes some kind of a difference.

My current schedule (as a freshman) is:

Language Arts 9
AP Human Geography
Advanced Alg/Trig
Biology
Spanish 1/2
Leadership/Health

For my sophomore year my schedule is:

AP Physics B
Anatomy & Physiology
AP European History
Honors Language
Spanish 3/4
Pre-Calculus

Also my junior and senior year schedule just incase if anyone was wondering:

Junior-

AP US History
AP Calculus AB
AP Language
AP Chemistry or Chemistry
UW Spanish
Sports Medicine
Volleyball/Advanced(required PE)

Senior-

AP Computer Science
AP Government
AP Calculus BC
AP Literature
Drawing(required arts credit)
Advanced Volleyball(required PE)/elective
Advanced Sports Medicine

I plan on being very lazy senior year too haha.

Does my sophomore year schedule seem too rigorous?

I got a C+ and B- in Algebra 1 and a B- and B+ in Geometry but that was in middle school and I didn't care much, but I have an A both semesters in Algebra 2, in my opinion algebra 2 was way easier and it's not that hard.

So in summary my questions are:

1) Is it a good to idea to take ap physics b as a sophomore?
2) Is the exam hard?
3) Do I need a knowledge of calculus to do well in the class?(I plan to get an A)
4) Is my sophomore year schedule too rigorous?
5) I'm applying to UCLA, and I saw somewhere that they don't look at freshman and sophomore year? Is that true? Does that mean they won't know I took three AP classes?

1.There is no AP Physics B. It’s now a 2 year course (AP Physics 1 and 2)
2. read above
3. It’s algebra based physics so no
4. no
5. UC schools only look at 10th-11th grade scores I beleive.

So would I have to take ap physics 2 as well?

As a current AP Physics B student who also took AP Euro as a sophomore I would advise against taking it, but that’s just me. It is doable but a lot of work if you don’t immediately understand the concepts.

@futureuclabruin take chem before physics. At my school that’s not even an option. you are required to take chem sophomore year for graduation. Don’t know what your school requirements are, but I strongly suggest this.

I’m doing AP Physics B as a sophomore who took Algebra 2 as a freshman.

It’s not that bad in certain fields, but in some I am completely lost, and I expect to get like a 3 or 4.

However, that’s mostly because my teacher has a very thick accent and isn’t too good at explaining concepts.

@guineagirl96 is there any chemistry concepts I need to know for physics? Our requirements is you just need 2 years of science

@apollo11 is there a lot of information needed to know? Since ap physics b is being divided into two years next year, I plan on taking 1 and 2

1 is pretty easy, 2 is grueling.

LOL, or you could save time by taking physics C. I have no idea why they split up the course.

Physics B and their split up versions are easy and a waste of time.

NO that class is hell don’t take it
I took it this year as a senior and it’s the most boring class ever, dealing with concepts related to wrenches and springs and the angular reflection off a mirror. personally, I couldnt think of anything more boring.

advice: if you’re going to take physics, just take calc-based physics. it’s so much easier

@wcao9311 I would if my school offered it and yeah I know it kinda screwed over my schedule now that it is

@ValleyofUnrest17 was it because the teacher was boring or the class In general?

well my teacher is great. he is giving me a B when I deserve an F.
but honestly, the material is ridiculously boring. I opted for the class because I thought it was going to be really interesting, so I was pretty excited to take it. but my expectations fell short, and I have to say that it is THE most boring class I’ve ever taken in my life. plus it’s hard, and having it be algebra-based just overcomplicates the problem solving involved in the questions. using calculus (which is what you’d use in physics c), you could solve an physics b problem in 5 min where it would’ve originally taken you 15 due to all the algebraic derivations and stuff.

if you have to take ap physics, just take physics C. you’ll regret it if you take physics b, seriously.
