I really struggled with a pre-calculus type course in high school (AICE Mathematics) which I took during my junior year. Bewilderingly, I somehow managed to earn a passing score on the exam which determines if we get college credit, and is now reflected on my degree audit in college. I took AP Stat during my senior year, effectively taking a year off from all things Calculus related, and have pretty much forgotten everything. Would it be wise to take Calculus I right off the bat, or should I take a pre-calculus or trig course to refamiliarize myself with calculus stuff?
Your choice of major will play a role in what math classes you should choose. For example, if you plan on majoring in Psychology, the 4 credits you earned in MAC 1147 (Precalculus: Algebra and Trigonometry), may be all that you need (other than some additional stat classes). However, if you’re majoring in Engineering, you may want to have a good foundation in Algebra/trig before talking Calc 1.
If you need to take MAC 2233 (Survey of Calculus 1), you likely can jump right into it. If you need to take MAC 2311 (Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1), see if you can find some example test online, and you may want to think about taking MC 1147 as a refresher course)…
Good Luck!
That’s what I was thinking, just take the MAC 1147 again (which is what AICE Math gave credit for), especially since I have Calc I–III to take in the future. I feel it would be wise to obtain a strong base before trying to remember basics from over two years ago. Thanks for your input!
