Should I take PSAT Prep?

I recently took a free practice SAT at a local test prep center. They told me I scored over a 2030 and recommended doing a PSAT prep course because I could have a chance at being a recognized as a National Merit Scholar if I study up a bit. Is it worth? Or should I just wait and study for the actual SAT in a few months? (I am a current junior). Thanks!

Since you only have 3 weeks, prep course is not worth the money. You are better off studying it on your own, do practice exams from the blue book. I registered my son for Kaplan PSAT prep course, but he just doesn’t have time to get online to study since school started.

Get the Kaplan PSAT book, read it very thoroughly, and do all the practice tests in the next couple weeks. If you finish that, go to the Official SAT Study guide (“blue book” from College Board) and do as many SAT practice tests as you can get through. (Skip essays for now.) Make sure that you analyze every question you get wrong on the practice tests so that you will be less likely to miss the same type of question again. Math and writing (grammar) are easier to improve than reading, so if you are running out of time, concentrate on those two. Good luck. Yes, it is worth studying now if you are that close and looking for scholarships. (Three of my kids made it–and they only made it by a couple points. Pretty sure that none of them would have made it without the practice books. All of the info. is in the books, so you don’t need to pay extra for a course.)

Just get the College Board Blue Book and start hammering away. Best of luck.
