Should I take SAT II Math Level 1 or Math Level 2?

Hi guys! I would really appreciate some guidance with this, as I am pretty lost.

I am a junior in AP Calculus, but I would not consider myself “great” at math. In fact, it’s one of my weakest subjects. I took the SAT II subject test for Math Level 1 in November and received a 730. When taking the SAT this January, I scored a 740 in the math subsection (2310 total, 1530/1600 subscore).

If I am aiming to get a 750+ in either one of the math subject tests when I take it this May or June date, and am willing to do some studying, which one would you guys recommend?

As in, which would be easier for me to get my score up there for, or, at least, what criteria affects which test is easier for which students. For example, is Math 2 “better” for students in higher maths to take (as in, they will score better because they have knowledge of PreCalculus/Calculus)?

I have had people tell me “Huh? Why would you take Math 1? You’re in AP Calc.” but I don’t know what this is based off of.

[I am hoping to major in biomedicine at a top university, if this is at all relevant]

I appreciate any help and guidance with this. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

It’s based off of Math Level II being more respected, and covering precalc. If you are a high level math student, you should do well on the Math Level II subject test. The Math Level II also has a generous curve. People actually have lower Math Level I scores. However, your Math Level I score at a 730 is very good. It is at or near the 90th percentile, and with such a good score there is no reason to retake it. You’ve shown that you are good at basic math. Now, you shpuld give the Level II. The Level II tests more advanced content, and some universities only accept Level II. Overall, Level II is more respected. You’ve done amazing on your Math Level I. Now it’s time to move on and do well on the Math Level II.

Plus average scores for Math level II are actually higher

I would say go for the Math Level 2, especially if you’re in AP Calc. If you get a prep book and study hard enough, you should get at least a 750. Tell your math teacher that you’re doing this. They might offer to help tutor you and prepare you.
