The counselors at my school messed up on schedules this year, so I can't take the elective I wanted, which would've fit in with the electives I've taken every year so far. Anyway, so I have the option of just taking study hall, or taking another elective. However, the new elective would look completely random on my schedule because I would have no prior experience or relation with it. So I'm begging for your expert knowledge, which option would be better, admissions-wise? Btw I'm an incoming junior. Thanks :)

I personally would take the random elective. Most colleges will view taking a whole period of the day for study hall as laziness. And what is the elective? Most electives are beneficial in some way (unless it’s culinary arts or childcare, lol). I was stuck in somewhat of a similar situation as you in my junior year, and had to take marketing and speech. While they did appear somewhat random, both classes taught me a good amount of useful information. So bottom line is I would pick the elective, unless it’s something ridiculously stupid like knitting haha.

Just take what you want, since neither is going to help you much. I don’t think they’d be impressed by a random elective that you show no interest in, and I don’t agree that they would see one study hall as showing laziness, unless your schedule is not rigorous to begin with. If your schedule is already tough, I’d suggest taking the study hall so that you can get the best grades possible in what’s arguably the most important year with regards to college admissions.

Electives are electives, if they’re random who cares. You are exploring your interests. I’m taking my random elective with pride, you should too :P
