I was recently accepted to both Michigan State, and Wayne State. Wayne gave mea pretty decent scholarship, and offered me a spot in their honors program.

I would like to major in neuroscience for my undergrad, but Wayne does not have this program -- State does. Because I was rejected from UofM, my plan is to attend Wayne in the fall, take prereqs for neuroscience, and PA (which is what I want to do for graduate) and then try to transfer for Fall 2014.

Should I take the money from Wayne State? I've read the reviews of their school, and it seems like they are as good as the other big names... or should I just go to State and get it over with?

Well if Wayne State doesn’t have neuroscience, then you should go to Michigan State. What happens if you try to transfer from Wayne to UofM, but get rejected? It seems like it would just be a lot less hassle to go to Michigan State and complete a degree in neuroscience, if it is affordable for you to do so.

Going to the cheaper school first to do your prereqs and then transferring to a school you want to go to is a good idea. However, I hope you have a backup plan if you don’t get accepted as a transfer student. When you apply to transfer, you should apply to several different schools. Starting your education at Wayne State is fine, but since it doesn’t have the program that you want, you have to make sure you have a few backup schools to transfer to if you can’t get into the school of your choice.

Are you saying Michigan State has the name ? That’s laughable.

Take the money. Go with Wayne State. Then apply to both University of Michigan and Michigan State. If you don’t get accepted to University of Michigan, Michigan State is the back up.

@XtremePower MSU has a pretty good name. Maybe not as strong as some other universities, but definitely more reputable than Wayne State and it has a strong reputation in Michigan.

If I was in your position, I would go with MSU. You are going to have such a better experience at MSU, than Wayne. The only justification for Wayne over MSU is if the lower cost of Wayne will actually will make a significant difference for your family. Otherwise, MSU is still quite cheap and will offer you a much better academic and social experience.
