Hello CC, I really need help.
I took the old SAT 3times so far and I am waiting for 3rd report. I first received 1600, then 1850, and I am expecting highest score for the 3rd, which is about 2000. Unfortunately SAT has change and I am in dilemma whether to take the new one or not. My plan is to attend top schools, mostly ivy leagues, so should I take the New one?
However, here is the problem. My friend have been telling me that how taking the new sat test could be a disadvantage for me. He said my new and old sat scores will be compared, and if I do better in new one than in the old one, college admission will consider the New Sat as incompetitive. I thought it would be ok to take the new one because since my sat score was going up, college admission will be aware that I will max my score on the next, although new, on this.
Can anyone give realistic opinion about how college admission will consider my scores? I would really appreciate your expertise on this matter. Will it be wise to take the new one, and possibly get highest score, or stay with the old Sat score?
Thank you
@plzivy5978 check each colleges’ website on whether they will accept the old SAT for your graduating year.
However in any case, it may be wise to really study at it and take the new SAT, since a 2000 is somewhat weak for most Ivies (for example, Harvard’s [average SAT score](The Harvard Crimson | Class of 2017) is somewhere in the 2200’s).
You can also try taking the ACT.
If you want admission to an Ivy League school, 2000-ish probably won’t be enough, so yeah, you should keep trying. Sorry to be so blunt, but I’m in a bit of a rush right now, @plzivy5978
If you are applying to Ivy Leagues and want a chance, you should take the new SAT or ACT. You have a lot of time before you have to apply, so you should take advantage of that time and study for another test.
Because it’s a bit too late to study for the ACT, I would say that you should just stick to practicing for the new SAT.
Definitely take the new SAT or ACT unless you have a big hook a 2000 will likely get your profile completely disregarded at the ivies. Sorry to be blunt. Study hard for the new SAT if you do well then you could be a competitive applicant for the ivies assuming high GPA and everything else is good.
Agree with every one else. Please don’t “plan to attend” an Ivy, but you can certainly apply to them. You really need a minimum of 700 in each section. Try the June ACT. Many people find it suits them better. Ideally you want over 32.
there are more things out there for the ACT but the new SAT is a gamble take practice tests, use khan academy.
