Hello,
I got a 4 on the AP Calc BC exam and it covers both Math 1551 and 1552. Even though I got that score, tbh I felt shaky during that class and it was really hard for me. A faculty from Tech said it is better to “move on” if students have credits, but I am not sure if it truly is better to move on to take MATH 1553 and 2551 (required courses) when I wasn’t even that confident in the AP class. Does anybody have advice or can share their experiences skipping or not skipping? Thank you!
The generic answer is that regardless of which school you go to, take some of the tests that are offered online by the university (hopefully you can find some). If you can handle the material, you should skip. But it depends on what your major is as well and whether you need to pad your GPA (though thinking that Calc 1 is an easy A is a dangerous proposition).
Most CS and Engineering majors at Berkeley who got 5s on BC that my kid knows of skipped Calc 1 and 2 and moved on. For some weird reason Berkeley Engineering lets you skip Calc 2 with a 4 for BC but you need a 5 for BC for Letters and Sciences in order to skip Calc 2. My guess is that probably for GT the students will think this way as well.
Definitely move on. You don’t want to waste credit hours and you will find it just as difficult as before if not more so at GT. As a parent of a GT grad they would say take the credit and don’t look back.
Move on, you already have the credit. If you feel like you don’t have the fundamentals . Sit and read the book. No pressure on doing homework or exams. Just you and book. Good luck
Thank you very much everyone! I’m thankful for the advice given and wanted to double check; I’ll likely move on to the next level and will try to find at least a nice professor to endure the tough class.
Calculus 3 depends on calculus 1 and 2. You may fail calculus 3 at GaTech, if you don’t spend the summer learning calculus. So, go to either MIT open Course and take the class 18.01, for free, or go to Khan Academy and retake calculus 1 and 2 . A 4 is an OK score actually, so you probably know more than you believe. The beginning of GaTech is stressful for some students. Their math prep is key to passing dozens of classes. If you are a biology, psychology, business or architecture major, then it may be OK to gloss over calculus, but it all depends on what you want to do, in your chosen field.
If you are planning to study any engineering field, physics, computer science or materials science, you need to know calculus cold. You have chances to repeat, but if every other student is way ahead in math, you will struggle all four years in some mathematical majors, without a very solid grounding in calculus.
Please please please for the love of god take the credits and move on. Trust me you will hate yourself if you don’t. Calc 1 and 2 are some of the biggest weed out classes at tech and even if you got a 5 on calc bc you would still struggle through them. Trust me. Going straight into linear isn’t fabulous but tbh it’s gonna not be great no matter when you take it.
TLDR: always take the credit even if you don’t feel 100% about it
