I'm having a bit of a dilemma here dealing with which school I should attend. In high school, I applied to Columbia and Cornell but was rejected by both schools basically because they were super reach schools (had a GPA of 3.4 and SAT of 1680). As a result, I decided to enroll as a freshman at Stony Brook University. When I visited Cornell and Columbia, I immediately fell in love, and think I can strive there if I get the chance. Stony Brook is a good school, but compared to the Ivy's, I feel like I can push myself much harder. So should I apply to Columbia and Cornell as a transfer, or just continue my undergraduate career at Stony Brook? I am currently majoring in Anthropology, with an interest in the evolution of humans. I don't know if any of this counts, but I'm also a first generation college student who comes from a low income, african-american, single parent household in NYC. If you have any advice, please share! Thanks =)

if you like sb then stay there, but either way i would recommend waiting to apply for junior standing so that your HS stats aren’t counted as much. ps i hated sb and transferred out of there ASAP.

I agree that given your HS record, it would be prudent to wait to apply for a transfer as a jr if you have significantly raised your gpa at SB. You are actually less likely to be accepted at those schools as a soph transfer than as a fr applicant due to their lower acceptance rates for transfers than for fr.

I’d wait and apply as a junior transfer. In the meantime, KICK @SS in school and run the campus.

Off topic, but can someone tell me what’s with all the hate for Stony Brook? I’ve never heard of anyone disliking it until coming to this site, but here it seems like everyone who goes there absolutely hates it and wants to transfer out.
As for your question, it can’t really hurt to apply to the schools, especially if you have a really great essay and extracurriculars. The worst they’ll say is no and you can apply again next year. I have no clue on your chances of getting in, but I’m sure weirder things have happened.

^ you can PM me if you’re super-interested lol but if you’re not going there, then it’s probably not a big deal lol

I’m in the same boat: Since I got rejected from all the ivys, I wanted to try to transfer as a sophomore or junior. I’m also at SBU and I don’t know if I should even bother to try, although I did relatively good in HS, I don’t think I’ll be able to get good reccommendation letters from professors since I have yet to catch their attention. Idk, all I want is a great school, I’m also thinking of trying other non-ivy top schools. I live close to SBU and I’m a commuter, so I want the have the total college experience living away from home - I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle SBU for four years. My question is should I even bother?? I had a 3.99 gpa in HS, a 31 ACT score, took plenty of AP’s and am currently a BME major - one of the toughest at SBU, and in a premed track. I do volunteer and work, and did many extracurriculars and am trying to get involved in college. thanxx
