I'm currently a Junior majoring in Economics at a jesuit school in san francisco (U. of San Francisco) and got accepted to GW as a transfer. However, is it worth transferring to in the spring? I have established good relationships with professors here and also the faculty is very approachable. At GW I heard it's the opposite, but someone told me that GW is ranked #52 while USF is ranked #115. Does it make a lot of difference? Does going to GW give me any more of an advantage than at USF (job opportunities, etc) ? Thanks!

P.S. I also have the option of going to UIUC.

I would not transfer solely for the rankings. If you are happy at USF then stay there, rankings don't matter much, especially if you are going to grad school.

But wouldn't I have a much better chance of finding a good job w/ a GW degree than a USF degree? Quite frankly, not many people have heard of USF. I'm not saying GW is the best school in the world but .........

Honestly I don't think anyone you're working for will care unless you're trying to transfer from USF into an Ivy league school like Harvard or Yale. If you're looking to transfer to GW solely based on rankings, I think it's a bad strategy. If, however, your major isn't really offered at USF but has a strong program at GW, then go for it, or if it's a problem with your environment, etc. Basically what Mightymeals said is true. Grad school is where it's at.

You might as well send out the application, there's no point in NOT sending it out, you can decide if you want to transfer when you get the acceptance/decline letter back.

I have several friends at GW and that have graduated. If you are concerned about post-college/job possibilities, GW will definitely carry more weight. As far as social scene, it is what you make of it. Yes, there are a good amount of rich kids that don't care much about money and yes it is one of the most expensive schools in the country(50K a year total). But you are in DC, the nations capital, which is a great base for a lot of things whether it be research, internships, etc. If you are unhappy in SF then I'd say give it a shot.
