Should I try again?

I received a 33 composite on my most recent ACT.

35-English
33-Mathematics
33-Reading
32-Science

In the past I got a 36 on the reading section. I think I could get a 34 composite. Is it worth retaking?

Do colleges care whether an applicant got a 33 and a 34?

Thanks - Jon

haha…no…

One point, more or less shouldn’t make too much of a difference…

Where are you applying? If you’re applying to the Ivies, definitely re-take. Shoot for a 35 or 36, not a 34 – you have the ability.

If you think you could only get a 34 if you retake it, I’m not sure it’s worth it. But, if you are able to get a 35 or 36, then you should definitely go for it.

I’ve never actually studied for the ACT-- with the exception of reviewing punctuation rules the night before. If I take a few practice tests it would help with my time management which would boost my math section. I didn’t have time to finish the math and science sections so I guessed on the last couple problems. Consider, however, that I’m only trying to become more competitive for a scholarship at my local public college, The University of Louisville, which requires a minimum of a 32 composite.

– Thanks, Jon

If you’re just doing it for a scholarship, then I’d say no. My guess is that once you’ve met the cut off, one point won’t matter much. If you’ve got the extra curriculars, etc. that they’re looking for, then I think it’s time to sit back, relax, and see what happens.

Of course, like everyone else says, if you think you could bump your score to a 35 or 36, well, a perfect score never hurt anyone…
