Should I update admissions on my rank?

I was bordering on not posting this, because I’m going back and forth on whether or not its a stupid question. Basically, when I submitted my application back in November, my rank was around 40(?) of 220(?). My midyear brought me up to 1. I really wasn’t going to do anything about this because 1, I’m pretty sure UW doesn’t require a midyear report (so why would they take a ranking from a midyear?), and 2, I just thought it wasn’t that important. But I guess the stress of waiting has gotten to me, and I’ve started wondering how strong my application really was. My opinion, at the moment, is that it’s really not worth bothering admissions over. Then again, I’m not sure how much things like ranking matter. Any second opinions? I really appreciate it!!

You went up 39 spots based on one semester of grades? How could that possibly happen?

Or do you mean you went up one spot, from 40 to 39? If that’s the case then don’t bother.

@Twoinanddone, sorry for the late reply! In short: I went up 39 spots. My school’s method of ranking (while I didn’t realize this before) is STRANGE, and I’ll try my best to explain it. Basically, it should be using percentiles instead of numerical rankings, but it doesn’t, for some odd reason? Once you surpass a certain GPA, or enter the grade range of a certain group of students, your rank automatically jumps. So, technically, I’m “tied for first,” even though there are kids with higher GPAs than mine. I’m DEFINITELY not in the ~40 rank anymore, though, and 40 looks kinda bad IMO. I’m just not sure whether this is worth reporting or not. But thank you for your response!

It should be your GC that reports rank – not you. And yes, if you are ranked #1, schools should know.
