Should I withdraw from French?

Ok heres the deal. For some stupid reason I decided to take French this semester, dont know why but I did, and im not doing to well. I absolutely suck at the language, I just dont get it at all, I have an F so far in the class. I can barely get 60s on the quizzes, it sucks. So should I work as hard as I can from now on and try to possible scrape a C in the class or just drop it? Im trying to transfer for next year so thats why im asking here. Im currently a sophomore with 31 credits and I should have 47 by the end of fall 2005 or 43 if i decide to drop french. This would be the first time I ever withdraw from a class and the last day to do it is Nov. 4th so thats why im thinking about it so much, its next friday. Im not trying to transfer to any big name schools like duke or any ivys. Mostly just state schools like Virginia Tech, Ohio State, JMU, and UMD. So what do you all think?

Sounds like you should of taken a language that you are interested in. Drop it and take German, since I doubt you can pull up your grade.

So Pass/Fail is not an option......sounds to me as if you could pass.

I was interested in french, at the time. It was stupid of me to take it, I dont even need it. I took spanish 300 and got a B in my first semester as a freshman because I placed into it. And I took 2 years of german in High school.

i would drop it. not worth your gpa. also, stop taking classes you don't need.

I take classes I don't need.......why is that a moronic idea? I have also taken languages I didn't need......for fun. I am sorry this didn't work out for you....cut your losses and forget about it.

I don't know what your GPA is, or the grades it is composed of right now, but if the highest grade you can end the semester with in your French class is a C, it is NOT worth it, especially if you're transferring. For one thing, it will be too much of an uphill struggle to have a passing grade, and if for any reason you make anything less than perfect on a test, quiz, or anything requiring a grade, you will be screwed. I'm assuming that if you drop the course now, you'll get a W on your transcript, which doesn't count against your GPA. I think it's nice that you're willing to put the effort to work really hard, but it's too much to bank on, and the stakes are too high at this point, since your grades are "barely in the 60s". A W won't kill you at all, or nearly as much as anything less than a B would.

And hey, if you like French enough (I'll admit it, I like the language), you can always take it at the school you transfer, provided that you're a successful transfer. There's nothing wrong with taking classes you don't need, as long as you enjoy them and are doing well in them...and it looks as if neither is the case is here.

I agree -- don't risk destroying your GPA, especially for the sake of a course you don't care about.

I vote for drop too. Easy decision.

Ok, so i've decided that im gonna withdraw. I've never actually withdrawn from a class so how do you do it. At my school I just have to go online and click on the class and click withdraw, but is it normal to talk to the professor before or anything. I dont really thing she likes me anyways probably since im doing so bad in the class. Also how will this W affect my chances of transferring? It will be my first and only W on my transcript.

You issue is will it be a simple W or a WP or WF? Your school will have dates that dictate this.......you simply need to log on and read the rules of grading or the rules of registration. This information is usually easy to find. As to whether the prof will dislike you because you aren't doing well.......why would she ever put that much emotional energy into a student she knows not? I think you imagine such a case.....I opine she will be relieved you are W because then she won't have to issue a failing grade. Good Luck and you have made the decision so you must be feeling much better.

i have withdrawn from like 14 classes, i never said anything to my teachers.
and it didnt affect my chances of getting into UCSD (ca, state school)

So one W will not put you at any disadvantage
