My daughter is considering Applying ED to Mount Holyoke and Bryn Mawr. She has a 4.0 UW GPA, good rigor (for her school)/ECs/essay/letters. Should she submit this ACT superscore or go test optional?
Obviously math is a standardized test weakness, but she has As through Pre-Calc and is taking dual enrollment college algebra. 5s on AP English Comp, Psychology, Government and is applying as a Sociology major.
Yes, thanks she’s considering one for EDI and another for EDII. Yes, that’s the most recent Common Data Set information. Her GC is good but we are at a small overseas Department of Defense school without specific experience with these colleges, just trying to expand our knowledge pool on our own too.
Edit: There is some hesitation on her part because she knows the math score is low and doesn’t want that to be a red flag. She is a competent math student but doesn’t process quickly on standardized test questions.
I understand, but am confident that AOs will give far more weight to her As in math classes for the last 6 semesters than a couple of three hour tests. What math class does she have this year?
I agree that she should submit it. Those English scores are great! And I think that the high grades in math will definitely help her. Also, I think that she will get a boost because she’s grown up under unusual circumstances, as a military kid, living on bases. What’s she going to write her essay about?
I haven’t seen the finished essay yet but I think it’s about the transient military lifestyle, perhaps tying in being a more progressive person in a conservative environment.
Yes, those are strong scores and the 35 and 36 are more directly relevant to what she wants to study. Both of those schools are selective, but not insane.
My DS is in almost exactly the same situation with different schools. He is a humanities focused student, same ACT composite and almost same Eng/Math subscores as your daughter. With his composite at 50% mean, his private HS guidance counselor (someone our family likes and trusts) is telling us to submit because his GPA is strong (above the schools’ mean for GPA). I had same concerns as you but we are going to submit.
Thank you so much, this is refreshing. I like our counselor, she wrote a really great letter for our daughter, and she is on top of administrative deadlines and such. But, I’m just not sure she has the most experience with all the nuances of the different US application situations.
Good luck to your son, I hope he ends up with the perfect fit!
