This is the second quarter of my senior year and I got a C + in my AP Statistics class, an elective. It's the only bad grade I received. I applied regular decision to Northeastern, and I'm afraid that this C+ is going to greatly affect my chances for admission b/c I fall in about the middle range of acceptance. Should I either call or write an essay to Northeastern explaining my bad grade to show that I am very interested in the University? Or would this just put me out to be a very whiny student? Not sure what to do, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

ah i don’t know! i am inthe same boat as you. I got a C+ in my AP Biology course first quarter then second quarter i got a B…will that be okay? i was thinking about writing a letter as well…i don’t know.

It’s a tough call, b/c I want to show my interest in the University without looking like whiny kid. Still not sure. Well for you it depends on your stats…whats your sat, gpa and all that?

I dont understand why you think you should right a letter to make an excuse about a bad grade. Maybe if you just actually tried for one last quarter to get at least get a B, you wouldn’t be in this position. It’s your own fault, now be prepared for the consequences.

I wouldn’t write the letter. It’s probably not going to be glaring compared to everything else. And AP classes are weighted, though not in senior year yet (at least at my school they’re not). I’m not sure what to say about it, but I really don’t think that writing a letter to call attention to it is the answer.

Torty08: for someone who is so critical, you spelled “write” wrong.

Good one ready2011! LOL!

Thank you very much for the feedback ready2011. By the way in my school AP Classes are still weighted senior year. I think I’ll just let it be, to be honest my other grades are fine, I guess I just want to attend this school so bad that I freaked when I saw the grade. So your probably right, I’m better off not calling attention to it. And to torty08, don’t be so quick to assume that I slacked and that is the reason for my poor performance. I have my personal family reasons which prevented me from giving full attention to school. Thanks again and any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

zeehuss786, i feel ya. ap stats sucks.

but i’m sure that neu will be able to overlook them. they understand that senior year is tough and that you are taking a college level course.

We get this question about 6 times every year.

Really, I think admissions probably has better things to do than to look at the transcript of every single one of the 40,000 applicants and say to one another “I dunno, Jimmy has a good GPA and a good SAT and great ECs, but he got this one semi-mediocre grade in a tough class, so… yeah, terrible student, reject him”.

If you are already a good applicant, ONE mediocre grade (a C is really not THAT BAD) is not going to break your chances.

And I always like to mention that I got a D in physics senior year only because my physics teacher didn’t fail seniors. NEU didn’t seem to notice, definitely didn’t care, didn’t rescind my application or take away my scholarship or put me in dumb kid failure housing or place me in Physics for Losers. I also bombed all my AP exams, which was hilarious when I met with my adviser… “Ok… so, you don’t have any AP credit… but, well, that’s ok…”

Hahaha thanks for all the replys. I just freaked when I saw it at first, but I’m good now. I’m just going to leave it and not call attention to it.
