I'll be a freshman at USC this year, and I was hoping a current student/parent would be able to help me out. I have to go from LeConte College for math to Swearingen for my engineering class in 15 minutes. I would prefer not to bring a bike (I can almost guarantee it will get stolen) but I think it might be too far to walk in that time. Is the shuttle system reliable? The yellow route looks like it will work out for me, but if it's not then I will just need to bring a bike.

Not sure about the shuttle system reliability but when I was there many years ago I walked from humanities buildings (where everyone took language placement) to coliseum for journalism classes. Now you may have to walk at a brisk pace but on the other hand, I never gained the freshman 15! If going from Leconte to Swearingen at least it’s downhill. I would try walking it when you get there…good luck.

theres lots of bikes on the campus, just dont bring a shiny brand new top of the line one. And get a good lock! S’s first (nice, shipped from home) bike was stolen outside his freshman dorm but the used not so nice replacement lasted the rest of his time on campus.

Thanks for you help. I would prefer to walk everywhere, but my adviser suggested bringing a bike so I thought I would figure out all my options. I think I’ll give walking/shuttle a test run the first full week of classes, and if I feel like I need a bike after that I’ll just go get a cheap one at Walmart or something.

How about a folding bike? My son has one and stores it in his dorm room at night.

If you decide to get a bike, one of the orientation speakers advised getting a U-lock, not a chain-lock.
