Sidekicks at Duke

I have T-Mobile, and my phone switched to another network (I think it was called Suncom or something?) during my entire overnight visit a few months ago. I really like my Sidekick III, but I don't want to bring it if T-Mobile isn't available on campus (the Sidekick plan, which is $1/day, only works with T-Mobile). Do any of you own/know anybody who owns a Sidekick at Duke? How is working out?

I don't see any reason why T mobile wouldn't work at Duke?

I don't really know why...I was there in October, and as soon as I picked up my phone to let my overnight host know that I was on campus, I noticed that the screen said "Suncom" (?) where it normally reads, "T-Mobile." It was like this the entire time; my host (who also had T-Mobile) said that her phone was the same way. I wouldn't really care, but all my info (calender, to-do list, notes, etc) for my Sidekick are specifically stored on the T-Mobile network.

Perhaps, then, it's time to consider another smartphone from another carrier, one that doesn't store info on the network.

Take a look at this Duke University website which shows coverage maps for Verizon and Alltel:

<a href="http://www.oit.duke.edu/televid/wireless/maps.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.oit.duke.edu/televid/wireless/maps.php</a></p>

Your carrier should also have a coverage map available so that you can compare.

My D had to switch carriers as her cell phone did not work at all during her visits to Duke. She now uses Verizon.

Sidekicks are great, but you'll have to find a carrier who has coverage that will work for you at both your home and college locations. Good luck.

I believe T-mobile doesn't have coverage in most parts of the Carolinas. You would therefore be roaming.

I have T-Mobile but my phone says SunCom when I'm at duke. My phone still works fine, my voicemail is a little messed up. You aren't charged for roaming.

Hmm, thanks for the input, guys. What providers work best at Duke?

I live in NC. After going through Alltel, Cingular, and Sprint, I have found that Verizon has the best coverage in the state--especially in outlying areas.

ok, I'm hovering between Cingular or Verizon...I'll probably look at the individual plans and decide that way. I've pretty much heard that Alltel isn't very good...
