Siemens Competition Semifinalists Announced

update email? what is the email? can I fax/mail them an update letter?

regional finalist :D

getting a package in addition to the 1k is really awesome - are they usually cool and nice things or just cheap toys :frowning: ?

although i do want to know how impressive this is to colleges. i’d think that being regional finalist, while not guaranteeing you fullride, would at least to a decent extent (not entirely) guarantee you being accepted at some good tech schools

anyone here going to the carnegie mellon regional??
id so prefer to just drive in… but itll take me 7hrs from nyc so i think i might have to fly there. anyways. im already starting to feel nervous about it… they announce the winners the monday right after the regionals. why must siemens do everything so quickly.

and apparently, according to friends, siemens regional winners (the ones who go to nationals) almost always get into their top choice schools, usually hyp. same for intel finalists.

^How bout, Semifinalists? And can I fax (or mail?) an update letter to Stanford, MIT, Princeton on getting? If so, could I attach an abstract as well? Does anyone know? Thanks…

Yes, I called stanford. They said you can mail it, or email it (at least that’s what the person said). You can attach an abstract, or even the paper itself.

I just sent it to the General Stanford Admissions email.
Guess I’ll see what happens

Is there anyone here who is leaving from NYC to Carnegie Mellon for the Regional Finals?

im in cali…and im going to Georgia… D:

but it’s okay i suppose

Lol really?

Is anyone actually going to send a copy of his or her abstract with college application?

^I am, plus an update letter saying I got Siemens semifinalist. What do you guys think? Can I just mail it to the college (Office of Undergraduate Admissions) or w/e?

Yes, I sent my paper and abstract.

Yeah, just mail it to admissions with your name, commonapp ID (if applicable) and birthdate.

Alright thanks man! Which colleges did you send your research report + abstract to? I’m planning to send to MIT Stanford Princeton, hopefully they don’t get annoyed at the extra 9 page thing they see =p

^^^ Serious? Your paper is only 9 pages?

Thats… so short.

Mine was at least 15-16.

Doesn’t Stanford explicitly discourage supplementary materials (other than optional evaluation and arts supplement) like research papers?!

I think the people who make it to Nationals are probably already qualified applicants at most top schools.

since everyone is wondering, I will share some empirical examples that I know of.

2007 National Finalist (family friend) – now at Caltech (1st choice); only applied to two others, MIT and Cambridge and was accepted at both.

2008 Regional Finalist (graduate of my school who I don’t know well) – now at Stanford; I don’t know all the schools she applied to, but she was also accepted at MIT and Caltech.

I’m a Regional Finalist.

Is anyone here going to the Notre Dame Region Competition?

oops, I meant 9 pages single spaced. So 18 pages double space o.o
and torcher- yea, that’s what I thought too??
This is why I’m confirming…do MIT and Princeton really want the research report? I’m thinking of just mailing them an update letter…but that would be such a waste of postage just saying “I got Siemens Semi-finalist” …

Ugg… gonna go to Notre Dame. I wish I could go to the MIT one!!!

MIT = SLOAN

I’m hoping it helps nevertheless. I’m a bit … uneasy? about my apps.

^Don’t worry, I don’t think anyone can be more uneasy about college apps than I am right now; for one thing, I still have to finish and submit it:( I just finished my second essay a few minutes ago, at 00:30 in the morning.

I’m considering mailing in my research paper as a supplement, but then, maybe Siemens itself gives my research some kind of legitimacy, so making someone at a college read 20 pages of high school research may be somewhat superfluous…

Have fun at the upcoming regionals everyone!! Best of luck!!
