Sierra Nevada College

My daughter was recently accepted at Sierra Nevada College. She is an avid snowboarder and heard of the college at a snowbording camp she attended in Oregon. We live in Massachusetts. Does anyone know anything about Sierra Nevada? Thanks.

It is ranked as a "fourth tier" liberal arts school by USNWR. In Massachusetts and adjoining states, for comparison, that is on the level of Atlantic Union, Mass. College of Liberal Arts, Franklin Pierce, Green Mountain College, and Pine Manor. 84% of all applicants are admitted and a quarter of the class has SAT's below 820. I hope you can visit the college before she makes up her mind as its academics are not compelling.

Thanks for the feedback, it's very helpful. We'll certainly visit before she makes any decisions.

I am from Nevada myself and not even that many people here know about it. I do think the snowboarding would be excellent though because I believe the college is close to Lake Tahoe.

The college is in Incline Village, literally on the shores of Tahoe. It's a lovely location but the antithesis of a college town environment. If snow is your chief concern then the school is a good choice. If academics are your chief concern then you will likely want to look elsewhere.

But better snow in Utah and Colorado. I'd look to Colo. College in the Colo. Springs and UC-Boulder. UC-Colo. Springs and maybe even Western State College in Gunnison would be a better education than SMC. Also, don't forget Univ. of Denver, high acceptance rate and only an hour from Loveland Ski Area.
