does anyone happen to know how hard it is to get recruited by these guys at tech? im really interested in this frat and was curious.

During rush, go to the house, meet as many people as you can, come back a few nights in a row, and they’ll vote on you. If you are a somewhat good guy, they’ll offer you.

Be careful at that house, though. They recently were kicked off campus for 5 years for severe hazing. They forced pledges to run through the sewer system and some caught nasty diseases, and they took a group of pledges to a bad neighborhood in Alabama, kicked them out of the car, and told them to find their way home with no wallets (a kid was stabbed in the back trying to get back to Atlanta).

Let me be a little more specific so you know how rushing a fraternity works.

You go to a house during rush and talk to the brothers. You ask them about the house, about their parties, about the types of guys in the house, etc. Spend about an hour or so at the house talking to brothers.

At the end of the night, they’ll have a meeting where they discuss all of the people they met. One of the brothers you met will say “Yeah, so I met this EaglesforLife kid, he seems like a good guy.” then someone else will say “Yeah, I met him as well. Good kid.” Then all of the brothers will decide to try to meet you.

You need to go back a second night. That night, you’ll notice that the brothers you meet will start introducing you to other brothers. You’ll probably need to be there for a while. That night, they’ll take a vote whether or not to make an offer. At some houses you need a majority of brothers to vote for you, at some houses it has to be 100%. You’ll need to go back a third night, and they’ll make you an offer.

If you don’t meet enough people on the first or second night, it might take a fourth trip. If you are dirty rushed the first night, you might get an offer the second night.

Thank you for such a thorough reponse. This was exactly what I was looking for.

In your personal opinion, what do u think the best frat is? I guess “best” in terms of popularity, parties, and interaction w/ the school. I know everyone has different opinions, but I was just wondering what ur thoughts were?

That’s like asking people what the best flavor of ice cream is. You’ll ask 30 people and get 20 different flavors and none of those are your favorite.

Every house is different and every person is looking for something different. For some people, not being in a house is the best choice. At rush you have a week to meet houses, so start early and go house to house. Meet the guys, get a feel for their personality, and ask them about campus involvement. You’ll figure out if a place is right for you. If not, there’s always Spring rush.

Hey Eagles,

As a current Tech student and brother in a fraternity, I think I might have some helpful insight for you.

1) There’s plenty of fraternities at Tech(around 30 or so) so don’t get too focused on one.

2) Take other people’s opinions of fraternities with a grain of salt, especially if they don’t actually go to Tech. When I was a HS Senior and during my time before freshman yr, I had plenty of girls in my grade or above me(freshmen at KSU, GaState, etc) trying to tell me which places I should go. Trust me, they don’t know ****. Just nod and smile. Everyone will likely have an opinion, and it’ll most likely be based off of one experience. Rush the places YOU like and feel at ease with.

3) Get in touch with the rush chairs at the places you’re interested in. Every fraternity usually does some sort of summer rush(IMO this is the best way to do it) Usually they go to Braves games or go rafting down the Chattahoochee River. They should have a facebook group for it. If you’re not from the Metro Atlanta area, unfortunately you’re SOL. You’ll still be able to do fall rush though, which is when most people rush.

4) Every fraternity is different from the other and each has their own niche. That’s why like BanjoHitter said, there’s no clear winner for who’s the “best” since its extremely subjective. You’ll find out Georgia Tech Greek Life is very different from most schools. We have the very traditional “southern” type fraternities(similar to ones you’d see at SEC schools, dresses fratty, conservative), and a more mixed/diverse type fraternities. We also have the stereotypical “nerdy” fraternities(halo/cod tourneys, lan parties, etc)

Ultimately, go where you feel the most comfortable. We can sense when a rushee is being fake, and that always means that we’ll pass on him. Another thing, NEVER act too cocky when you’re talking to the brothers(whether it be about school/grades, girls, sports, etc). That’s probably the number one reason why we’ll pass on a kid. You can still come off as confident without being cocky. PM me if you have any more questions. I can’t tell you what fraternity I’m in or about other fraternities(IFC rules), but I’ll help you out with any questions about rush.

What IFC rule is that? Only sororities are limited to what they can say, and that’s only to girls who’ve officially registered as rushees.

I’m not sure of the specific one, I just remember hearing we weren’t allowed to tell what fraternity we were in to the incoming freshmen that were going through FASET. It might not even be a rule after all, but either way…I don’t think advertising our fraternity on here would be the smartest move.

I agree that they’re plenty of options at Georgia Tech if you’re considering joining a fraternity. But in all honesty the “top tier” frats here have the best parties and get the most good looking girls. What I would consider a top tier frat (this is what I think so your opinion can be different) would include: Beta Theta Pi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Chi, Alpha Tau Omega, Lambda Chi Alpha. Those frats are really close with Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi or Phi Mu sororities, which probably have the best looking girls on campus. Beta, Sigma Nu and Sigma Chi are notoriously southern though, you’ll pretty much be wearing Polo’s, Croakies, and Sperry’s all the time, but wherever you feel comfortable is where you should go. Go around and look at all the frats and decide from there. About hazing - some frats are KNOWN to haze worse than others. But we don’t really know the truth unless you were a pledge there. If they make you do anything that you don’t want to do you always have the right to drop and go look for frats next semester.

I don’t know too much about SAE, but they are really southern, I think they just recently initiated a non-white brother. Their house is pretty nice, situated right between ATO and DTD. Go and check it out, maybe you’ll love it, maybe you won’t. You have a week to go look around at the beginning of fall semester which is nice since you won’t have much work to do so you can concentrate on looking at which frat fits you the best.

If you’re a Faset leader, you’re not supposed to talk about your fraternity to your Faseteers, but otherwise it’s ok. But, you’re right that there’s no real reason to say.

And speaking of best looking girls, how is the girl situation overall?

The female population of Tech, as a whole, tends to be very smart and also quite pragmatic. Consequently, girls aren’t going to throw themselves on you like at other places, but if you’re not an idiot and willing to put in a little effort, you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Guys from Tech complain a lot about the girl situation, but frankly, they’re not going to help their situation by complaining that there aren’t any girls at Tech.
