Signed Tax Return Forms?

I just wanted to make sure: on the original copies of my parents' tax return, it is NOT signed. With that said, can my parents just sign the copy of the tax return that will be sent to CollegeBoard for IDOC or should I have them sign the original copy, make new copies of that, and send it to CollegeBoard? Hope that makes sense! Thanks.

Just have them sign the copies. We file electroncally and never physically signed the forms.

I just signed my copies. And I’ve already sent to IDOC and they seem to be just fine. No “error notices” or anything (if there even is such a thing), and they’re already processed and available for my D’s colleges. So that should be good.

Why do people have to send signed tax returns to the college board?

If the school uses IDOC…that is administered by the College Board. They request signed tax returns. If that is what they request…that is what you send.

“why must they be signed”

by signing you are attesting to the fact they are true and valid.

Can you also send the forms to the school, or do you have to submit them to college board only, or both?

Depends what the school wants.
We didn’t have to send them to college board- however after acceptance and admittance, while filing FAFSA and PROFILE every year, we submitted signed forms inc W’2’s to the college.

sHAY888… If you’re filing CSS Profile, you’ll get a list of REQUIREMENTS, they’re different for everyone. They may require you to send in your and/or parent’s tax forms (don’t know if you’re the student or the parent). Possibly not all colleges want them, but one/some on your list might. Just do whatever you’re told to do when you get that e-mail.

But DO research ALL your colleges. Some require FAFSA, some Profile, and some have their own form. I had to do all three of these this year for my daughter. And, if you don’t “go looking”, you won’t notice those that require their own form. Don’t just assume everyone wants FAFSA.

ALSO - some colleges use IDOC but some don’t. I had to send taxes to IDOC as well as to one college direct. Research each school’s financial aid requirements.

Alright, I’ll have to look over those again. Thank you!

In every case…do what EACH school tells you to do. Send them what they want. Don’t send them extra “stuff”. You will need to check EACH school for their required forms and documents. They vary wildly.

If your school the Profile and uses IDOC, that is the ONLY time you would be submitting tax forms to the College Board, I believe. The College Board processes your Profile but does NOT ask for tax forms. The SCHOOLS ask for those…and some use IDOC to get them (administered by the College Board) and some schools will ask you to send your tax forms directly to them…SIGNED.

Do what each school tells you to do.

Where are your parents supposed to sign?

IDOC is basically a service the school pays for. They collect the documents and scan them into the computer for the schools. It cuts down on staff the school would otherwise have to hire/train/pay.

Look on the bottom of the second page of the 1040 form. It says “Signature” and then “date”. Sign there and the date should be the date you submitted your tax return.
