Today, I recieved my rejection letter from Duke. Nevertheless, I've already been accepted into UNC CH, so I will attend there next year. The problem, however, is basketball.

For the last 10 years, I have been a devout Duke fan; subsequently, this means also I have been a devout UNC hater (remember, this is in regard to basketball; I highly respect UNC as an academic institution). So the question is, how do I shift from a Duke lover and UNC hater to a Duke hater and UNC lover?

If it was any other college, it wouldn't be so difficult. But UNC and Duke are like the Bloods and Crips, you just can't go from one to the other. I'm hoping there are others on CC who are experience this same problem, or even better, have overcome this problem. What do I need to do? Any advice would be wonderful.

I have a friend whose brother was identical to you, an ardent Duke fan who choose UNC. He said within a week he had been transformed. And he was pretty intense, he shared season tickets with someone else, so he went to about half the games every season.

You would think it would be difficult, but from my observations, it is impossible to go to UNC without bleeding Carolina blue!

I know not of this basketball team you refer to as “Duke”. However, I do know of a “Dook” in the area, could this be the team you’re talking about? :-p

I think that if it really is seriously just a basketball thing, then that hate is fine and you can come over to the lighter blue side. If you hate Carolina students then that might be a little harder.

I mean, I hate Duke, but I also have crazy respect for them. I think that’s what makes the rivalry so interesting. It’s not like when we play Duke we’re playing with some annoying little cousin who sometimes surprises us (State), this is our RIVAL. They’ve got mad skills and a loooong history with us. It’s true, Duke hasn’t always been our rival - before there was UVA and the aformentioned State, but something about them being seven miles away really does something to the intensity.

No one will ever make you say that Duke is a bad team - though some may disagree with you if you say that some people at Duke are good people. I know, it’s wild, but I kind of like being at a school that doesn’t have a rival school… it has an ENEMY school. And it’s not like the GW vs Georgetown dynamic where one school lives in the shadow of the other. They’re so different that you can’t really compare them, I don’t think you could say one school is better than the other in terms of overall experience. That’s neat to me.

I was in a similar situation. My uncle was a Duke grad so I grew up a Duke fan. When I decided to go to UNC, I had to pretty quickly change courses.

First, read this: [Daily Tar Heel - Why we hate duke](http://www.dailytarheel.com/2.1384/why-we-hate-duke-1.173095)

The rest will come, I promise.
