Silverturtle and others - Writing section impossible to improve!

I feel as if I have a fairly strong grasp of the English language yet i only scored a 620 on the writing section of my PSAT. The questions that i get wrong are always the level 4-5 questions but i can't seem to minimize my mistakes to obtain a writing score of 750+.

Silverturtle, i know you're the SAT God and are particularly strong in the writing section so i was wondering if there is any advice you can offer me?

Practice. That seems to be the general consensus for improving in the writing section. It comes easily for me - I’ve never studied for it - yet I have studied for CR, and I did see a point boost. Just practice and review your errors. Preferably, use the BB and the online explanations. If you’re only getting mistakes in levels 4-5 questions, only do those. You’ll get a hang of it eventually, and just start to “see” the wrong answers easily. You’ll also spot patterns. The SAT is very repetitive - otherwise it wouldn’t be standardized, as it were, so practicing gets you to memorize the rules mostly, and directly identify the kind of error (I believe there are only around 10 possible types of errors) so you’ll improve easily. Writing is the easiest section to improve in.

Also, silverturtle will be releasing a complete SAT guide in the near future (I don’t know specifics) and it will have a comprehensive writing section. Should help you all you need, aside from the practicing part.

Good luck!

Yes, I finished the grammar section of the guide yesterday. I think it turned out pretty well.

^ How much more of the guide do you still have left to complete?

I am doing the Writing practice questions tonight. Then I have to do some additional information about the SAT and related logistics. I will also be writing some stuff about college admissions and selection. I hope to finish by this Friday and then submit it for review by a couple CCers whom I have already spoken to about reviewing it.

I thought writing was the easiest to improve.

Check the sparknotes’s guide about the grammar section. It contains the SAT common writing errors and how to deal with them.

jeez silverturtle, thanks for putting so much effort into something you really have no reason to do!

^ One of his reasons is to help people in this site, which everyone should be grateful for imo

Thanks Jimmy, I figure that I must practice to improve my scores but after practicing, reviewing my answers and taking another test it always seems as though new problems arise. I’ll continue to work at it, I’m highly motivated to do well on this test especially since I plan on applying to some pretty competitive schools.

Silverturtle, is your guide also useful for the math section? Writing and math are the sections I see the least improvement in. Also, would you expect your guide to be released by next Monday?

Unlike how I approached the Writing section, I didn’t cover any specific topics in the Math section. I just tried to lay out my strategy for approaching the section and the best ways to prepare.

Unlikely, but probably soon thereafter.

Probably one of the most useful guides for the Writing section: [SAT: Improve SAT Score with SparkNotes: The Seven Deadly Screw-Ups](<a href=“SparkNotes: Today's Most Popular Study Guides”>SparkNotes: Today's Most Popular Study Guides).

Thanks a lot silverturtle! I can’t wait.
